works in reverse....

Major airlines such as American, Delta, Hawaiian and United have round trip airfares travelling to and from Los Angeles (LAX) and Kauai Hawaii (LIH) for $301, nonstop. These are all basic fares. On American, Delta and Hawaiian, you are allowed a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you and a carry-on bag. On United, you are only allowed a personal item. If you are travelling with children on AA, Hawaiian or UA, you will be seated together as per their policy. Delta decides this on a case-by-case basis.

The earlier months are mostly on United, but check often because competitor airlines tend to match.

Travel Availability:

Airplane tickets are not a problem these days (although this is a good deal, not saying anything bad about it). It's the rentals/hotel that will break your wallet. I highly recommend looking for a place to stay before you jump on any flight deal. IMHO.
Yikes, I paid close to $3,600 for 10 nights at that Grand Hyatt pre-covid.
Good one, but from LAX...

Stops in HNL (much bigger airport and city) or SFO (it's actually 150 miles closer to Hawaii than LAX) aren't uncommon.

I paid ~$7k for a huge oceanfront 2 br condo for 7 nights in Maui last July. IMO forget the housing costs, it was the food and entertainment costs that killed me! Over $200/pp for a luau, ziplining, surf lessons etc. And groceries??? Don't get me started. I actually saw a $15 box of cereal. Thank goodness for the Costco. I get that it's expensive to fly goods in, but holy smokes!

It's sad that Kauai has become so expensive. Been there over a dozen times, even got married there (rented a beach front home with private beach for $5K for the whole week!). Now, everything is ridiculously expensive. You can't turn around without running into a fee of some sort.

Definitely find a place to stay FIRST so you know up front how much that is going to cut into your budget before booking your flight to the island of the Rich and Famous!

It's GREED. Until people stop going (will never happen) to lower prices, they will continue to gouge tourists with ridiculously high prices.

It seemed fairly empty after being there for a week recently. 50% capacity? Based on room lights. Could've been less, but I don't work for Hyatt.

It's not greed. I live in HI and the median price of a home here is $1.1 mil. That will get u almost a zero lot line property and a house that will seem to be built out of cardboard. It's ridiculously expensive to live here, but on the flip side we got the best weather on the planet.

Greed is a part of doing business. You can forget what was taught in college business school about ethics. It's all feeling good and extremely rare to see that teaching transferring to the real world. Business there can charge a ridiculous price because they know if you don't go, someone else will and willing to pay the ridiculous price. Also, they know that if you do go, you probably won't return because of the ridiculous price but nevertheless you already paid the price.

I guess you can say that's the modus operandi for majority of businesses out there unless that specific industry is facing stiff competition.

I get that you were trying to be funny but as another person pointed out it's very common to have a stop in either SFO or HNL.

Locals ONLY use Costco though and it's only a bit more expensive than the Costco's in the other 48 states. Also, more goods are actually shipped in then flown. I'm surprised you paid that much for a condo in Maui though. I went around the same time last year and we had a very nice VRBO and it was far cheaper than 7K. Probably about half the price. You must have had a pretty nice condo. Next time skip the luau and go buy some pulled pork and better liquor from Costco.

And the Jones Act makes the shipping costs higher as well. It is usually much cheaper to ship from the mainland to Australia than from the mainland to Hawaii.

Well, homes prices aren't the issue because I'm not buying a home in Hawaii. I'd be renting a home that is 20 years old or staying in a hotel that is just as old. To be charged a "reservation fee" and a "service fee" just to have the privilege of doing business with someone and give them my money is 100% greed. Forced "damage insurance" that used to be optional (we've never damaged a single thing the 20+ times we've been to Hawaii). That's just a couple. Car rental prices never fully recovered from COVID highs.

It's always been expensive to live in Paradise. But over 20 years I've seen the changes. But, like someone else said, there's plenty of people with LOTS of money willing to bend over and so THAT will be the modus operandi for the time being.

We've started going to Oahu because it's all-around cheaper there (or at least people aren't as greedy). Plus we have a great hook-up with a house rental where we pay cash and get a great rate -- about 1/3 the price of something similar on Kauai.

Aloha!

I took my mom to Oahu back in 1986 - two R/T flights from LAX, 7 nights double room at the Outrigger Malia, free airport transfers... for a grand total of $500 (actually slightly less but I don't remember the exact $ price). Went to Rent-A-Wreck (are they still around?) and got a compact car for about $50 for the week and drove around the island. Free parking at the hotel back then, and no rip-off "resort fees" (no one dreamed about that at the time, thanks for nothing, Las Vegas!).

I guess those days are long gone. Not likely they'll return (and not likely I'll return there, either).

In 1986 what was your annual salary? 30K? It's all relative.
