In the winter I don't mind so much as any waste is warming the room and 40w isn't all that much if I use it.
edit: I think it pulls 800 while it's bringing water from room temp to set temp. Again, from memory or reading the manual. Doesn't take long but then holds all day. I have mine on an Amazon smart outlet to kick on in the morning and eventually I tell Alexa to turn it off.
If you're gonna buy a Chinese kettle with a warmer setting, you can buy all kinds of good ones on Amazon. You're paying a lot for the name for little reason

I have a made in Japan Zoji kettle and use it daily over the last 3 years, never had an issue and we love it.

If concerned, Vacuum Edition (VE) models will block heat loss much better, much like an insulated Stanley.
Otherwise, in normal use, you can put your hand on the plastic body and it'll feel warm all day long - ie leaking energy as heat.
....
For a 4L water pot, around 0.8kWh per day, 24 kWh per month.
At $0.20 / kWh, you'll notice the ~$5 increase on the electricity bill.
....
For those that are clueless, think of it as plugging in another TV and turning it on every evening.
....
Note: this is the minimum expected because of you use more than one pot of water per day, there's the extra cost of heating cold water for each extra pot of water.

Think about apple products for reference. Also, on a whole, no one has ever complained that non-mass produced items from China were ever crap before. Think about fine China flatware, traditional clothing and numerous textiles, privacy screens, art tools (calligraphy brushes) and Many of their OG foods (stuff that China exported before they were mass market)
The converse is also true in Japan. If they need to build stuff to a price point, you'll absolutely notice it. JATCO transmissions, anyone? For even footing, compare items at DAISO from CN and JPN at the same price...they both last equally long (or equally short?)
