23 and me is a BAD VENDOR. Profit driven, using your data in stuff they sell to others that is supposed to be anonymized but wasn't or wasn't properly (more than once). They've been hacked by China (most recent one: https://techcrunch.com/2023/12/04...ion-users/), too. Our neighbor down the street has a daughter that worked there from the beginning and has plenty of horror stories. Never do 23 and me.

Never.

I don't believe Ancestry proper has been hacked. Their subsidiary rootsweb was in 2017, but unlike 23 and me, they didn't blame their customers for their system's security failure. I know plenty who have done Ancestry and found blood relatives they didn't know they had. So, and easy recommendation for Ancestry, especially at this price!
Share your genetic and racial info for free in their data records. Your insurance might access them in future to decipher about your health issues down the lane. Dont share your DNA period.
Don't waste your money on this crap. I did mine with 23andme and they asked a ton of survey questions about my origin and the results they provided was exactly what I gave them. It took them 3 mths for providing nothing more than I already know. It is a total scam.

So much fear mongering in this thread. Don't people have better things to do than comment on products they aren't interested in?

not iris scans, not fingerprints, and certainly not DNA
you can't change it if its compromised

certainly don't want to do it if you're Jewish

I don't know if it was just a 80's stranger-danger thing, but in elementary school all of our fingerprints were taken.

Everyone commenting about insurance denials and predisposed conditions…. Don't you think having labs and any testing in general, they have already done all of this if they want.

Go ahead give your DNA results to everyone including the government! What could go wrong!

Sell it to the highest bidder? Whats that China? You'd like the genetic makeup and location of millions of Americans? What could go wrong with that? You wouldn't do anything bad with that information would you? Cause you know, you could make some pretty "specialized" weapons. No thanks

I did 23&Me. No address was required, I didn't give my name and used a junk email not connected to my identity. Don't use the app either just in case. It didn't take any effort on that end. It's really not hard to not give them your data and still use them. Your DNA is useless to anyone else without being able to connect it to your identity.

There's no such thing as anonymity. You think using a fake email and fake data isolates you, but it doesn't. You're easily connected simply by the fact you used electronic tools to generate the fake information.

Probably very difficult to be truly anonymous with these, unless you use unattached email, name, and delivery address (preferably a common/shared one, like a massive corporation's office, or maybe an Amazon locker would suffice?)

Also the recent GM Smart Driver debacle (TLDR: GM vehicles were secretly spying on ppl and sending info to insurance companies, who identified them and raised rates) is an interesting parallel regarding insurance/privacy concerns. Those GM drivers (myself included, bought a new Camaro!) never thought our info could possibly be secretly sold off to insurance companies to be used against us. When it comes to DNA, we can't even imagine how this stuff could be used against us in the future.

Is this owned by the Mormons. What do they want with all this info?

They should pay you to collect your genetics information and sell it to the government to ID you later.

This is all US government's plot to get as much biometrics information as possible for Big Brother state.

Enjoy making law enforcement have an easy time prosecuting you and any family member who commits a crime and they recover DNA in the future. And hackers too can get your DNA and potentially use it against you. And people are paying for giving up their constitutional priviledge?

There is serious concerns brewing that 23andme is in serious financial trouble and will get bought out for their trove of DNA they have on so many people.

I mean I live in New York state and been on probation it's mandatory you give your DNA if you're on probation so I guess it really doesn't matter much

If your adopted or never knew who your father was, these tests are perfect for finding your birth family. I'm a member of DNA detectives group (founded by Cece Moore). Usually JUST an ancestry test can help us solve your case. You won't find it any cheaper than this.
