Can the average homeowner replace these or do you need a pro?

These are very easy to replace and do not require any special skills or tools. there are plenty of YouTube videos that explain it.

Respectfully, one does NEED a special tool: the winding rods for properly winding the springs.
I've replaced springs and a couple pairs of cables. The winding rods are essential.
Example rods [amazon.com]

Tip: place a scrap piece of wood against the sheetrock (2-3 ft at least 2x6 or 2x8) so that if the force from the winding rod is accidentally released, it will hit the wood and not damage the sheetrock.

Absolutely not. You're talking about changing the spring which can actually kill you and should only be done by a pro. These are the cables for the door which simply remove by hand (you do need a vice clamp to hold the door up) and have nothing to do with the spring

This is bad advice and untrue. Please do not remove your torsion cables without knowing what you are doing. They are under tension.

I have always been big on DIY, I pretty much have always done it all. With that being said, I don't mess with garage doors. My neighbor was killed trying to fix his. I don't mess with electrical too much either. There's certain times you need a professional.

Yes the cables can be easily changed when the door is all the way open and no tension on the cables, never attempt it when the door is closed because the spring tension can kill you or cause injuries. Always use safety glasses and gloves.

This is incorrect advice, and will get someone injured or killed. Torsion springs can still be under significant tension, even when the door is all the way open.

Make sure it's the thickest cables you can find for replacement. Don't go cheap on these cables. The whole garage door depends on them.

WRONG! You can't just take off the old one and slap new on. You have to release the spring

Don't be a drama queen. Anyone with a brain can do it after watching some YouTube videos. I did it and saved me a lot of bucks.
