Product Details:
  • Print Length: 432 pages
  • For the first time ever, a very special edition of the forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout in color by J.R.R. Tolkien himself and with the complete text printed in two colors. The Silmarillion fills in the background which lies behind the more popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters.
  • This definitive new edition includes, by way of an introduction, a letter written by Tolkien in 1951 which provides a brilliant exposition of the earlier Ages, and for the first time in its history is presented with Tolkien's own paintings and drawings, which reveal the breathtaking grandeur and beauty of his vision of the First Age of Middle-earth.

Nice looking book… I can never finish the first chapter though so probably end up as nothing more than that.
Nice, best price per Cx3. Although, I am waiting on a sale for the slipcase and clothbound version:

I highly recommend re-reading the Silmarillion.

I was also repelled by it my first time, and now it's my favorite of the series.

It's written in an elevated register similar to that of the King James Bible.

It's Tolkien's true writerly voice.

He loved the cadence of sacred, ancient language, and that love permeates the biblical English of the Silmarillion.

if you adjust to its archaic style you'll find the prose riveting, dignified, and even beautiful.

Like the Bible it also telescopes into and out of detail. A synoptic chapter about family lines will be followed by a hero romance, which gives the book an intriguing rhythm.

It also addresses dark adult themes more directly than LOTR, giving Tolkien's world a psychological completeness otherwise missing.

Quote from chulain519 :
You are missing out (and other person who said similar). Try sticking with it and it becomes the most hardcore, action packed Tolkien stories. You do need a good imagination because many stories are much more briefly elaborated than in LOTR. Basically covers about 50-100 as much Middle Earth content in a lot less prose.
Okay... you've convinced me to give it another try Smilie

Got my copy and already opened! Great to see the lovingly drawn illustrations by the master himself. They say a picture paints a thousand words, but for Tolkien I would say his words paint thousands of pictures!
