Using pucks increases the CYA in your pool water, causing over stabilization, resulting in more liquid chlorine being needed, the only way to get rid of CYA effectively is to refill the pool water.

Try using liquid chlorine for fresh water or SWG in your saltwater pool.

Liquid chlorine is a rip off. I live in Florida and have been using 3" pucks for 5 yrs without any problems. Water tests are perfect at pool supply co. using 1 puck a week some acid and occasional yellow algaecide. Many factors can contribute to chemical imbalances.

You can buy pucks without cyanuric acid. Cal hypo.

Swg is a pain in the arse and expensive. Once your pool is balanced you can use pucks with triclor algaecide and a clarifier.
Have one jug of chlorine handy for shock. Or just buy unscented household bleach for shock.
Two gallons of household bleach is about one gallon of pool bleach. Same ingredients different % strength
Yes you can use pool stops for checking your chemistry. The professionals use them

Sadly you are uniformed. The only way to have too much CYA is by adding CYA. Excess CYA will eventually make it impossible to have effective chlorination.

Removal of CYA requires drainage of the pool or substantial backwashing (same thing).

Most pool enthusiasts avoid tablets.

Cal-hypo costs more and it adds CH. Eventually your CH level will get too high and that can cause scaling, which can be really expensive to fix. If your CH level is low enough and you don't mind spending money then there is nothing wrong with cal-hypo. Bleach does involve more carrying, but most people are more than happy to do that in order to save money.

That's an option, but now you are trading excess CYA for excess calcium which is brutal when you already have hard water

Using pucks in Florida is the way to go. It's pretty hard to over stabilize a pool in Florida using trichlor pucks because of all the wash out from rain. Plus pucks work like Swg. You get a fairly steady supply of chlorine instead of the chemical spikes and bottoms of liquid chlorine.

I've been a member of tfp for 15 years. Yes there is a lot of information and knowledge on the forum. Too much information and too many opinions. pool owners tend to add and change their chemistry on posts that they read without taking into account the environment, pool use, water type, age. New pool owners aren't patient. That's why pucks work. Slow and steady and it's simple.
