Why not, Microsoft build quality is as good as apple or better?
This is an actual work horse, dock it and it can be used for productivity.
I thought software, hardware and build quality make a laptop product premium, not the brand. Very surface level thinking there, pun intended.

Seems to be an unpopular opinion, but none of my Surface devices were of such good quality all around that I thought they were better.. Yes, they have nice aluminum, a nice design, but i've had bad screens, screens with dirty screen effect, creaky hinges poorly back lit keys. I own a Surface Pro 8 and a Surface Studio, And have previously owned Surface Book 3s.

I think initially you're blown away by the quality. But I keep finding little things that aren't great quality wise.
I think the Surface Studio was something of a misstep. But I'm a Surface Pro 7 user and haven't had any of these problems - they mostly sound focused on the Surface Studio.

No, my surface pro 8 has a dirty screen effect. One of the volume rockers sounds different than the other, and the kick stand is a different color than the rest of the body.

I completely forgot to mention that I had a surface laptop 4 -15 inch. That was brand new and went back because it kept rebooting.

I understand that all manufacturers have device issues. But where it stands now, I can't call the Sufrace line better than any others and that's from personal experience. Especially when there are cheaper manufacturers getting close.

No problem on my Surface Pro 7 with slim pen.
The only issue I have is the peeling environment-friendly skin materials on keyboard.

of course you can't compare, Macbooks are miles ahead when it comes to hardware and optimization, you wouldn't pay $300 because you're broke lol

Take it from me, brand loyalty is dumb. I say take it from me, cause I was a DIE HARD 3dfx fanboi back in the day, and I would take on any Nvidiot that dared to say otherwise.

Hindsight... 3dfx was run by a bunch of buffoons who shot themselves in the foot trying to take it all in house. I bought a voodoo 5 when I should've switched to Nivida at that time. Sure, the OG 3dfx was great, but... they overestimated their abilities later.

Apple is in the same boat now. They HAD some great product at a time (when their 3g phone launched, and later when the ipad launched, the other competitors had clearly inferior products)... but that is no longer the case. Now, they are just charging WAY too much for crap, just cause it has an apple logo on it.

I bought my first surface last year. I got this same one, but the I5 model. Surface pro 9 I5 16gb ram AND costco even included the type keyboard cover. I got it all BRAND New a year ago for 1,000 when MS was charging $1300 for just the computer without the keyboard.

So far, this is the fist time in a long time when I've been completely satisfied in every way with a tech purchase. These are well built machines that can be a work horse, and honestly... even do some light gaming on low settings. It's got thunderbolt ports as well, two of them, so if you wanted to hook it up to an EGPU... you could game for sure. The hard drive is easily upgradable via a magnet door on the back and a single screw. Even reinstalling the OS was SUPER easy. Went to the MS site, downloaded the image for my surface, stuck it on a usb, was back up and running in about 20 minutes.

Good luck upgrading the storage in your mac products /rollseyes.

I HIGHLY recommend the surface pro machines. The one tweak I recommend if you plan to do ANY gaming on it at all is to lock the refresh rate. It has three refresh options. 60, 120, or "variable" where it switches based on what's happening on the screen. 60 is the best battery life, 120 is the nicest to look at, the variable setting tries to give you the best of both worlds. Which works fine for desktop applications. If you try to do any gaming though, that variable refresh gets weird. Like... if your not moving in the game, it'll drop down to 60, then if some action suddenly starts up, it'll jump up to 120, and your FPS in the game can swing wildly causing some unintended side effects and a "laggy" feel. Just lock it at 60 or 120 if you wanna play a game, and you'll be fine.

Soldered RAM im assuming? SSD swappable? Would this be ok to with photoshop or should i look at something with a more dedicated GPU

People have already answered you about ram and SSD.

Photoshop: seems like it's possible to use this for Photoshop. However, my guess is that you need to be mindful of how intense the work you're doing in Photoshop is. If you're working with large images and tons of layers, or otherwise complex things, something with dedicated GPU would be better I'd think. But this seems fine for basic stuff.

Programmers as well. Most people I know that do software research and development, or even most computer scientists in general that I know actually, run MacBook Pro setup and they do a solid amount of development on their local Mac. Remote in to Linux boxes for some stuff but a lot local.

That said, I personally remain a Windows user.

Not sure this includes a keyboard

As best I can tell, you're correct. You'd need to purchase the Surface Pro 9 keyboard and slim pen. Someone on here said that added that to this and still came out under $1000.

I've never seen a fellow programmer who would use a Mac to work! Unix, Linux, Windows, yes, Macs - never. We need a workhorse, not a show-off gizmo.

Obviously personal experiences vary. I believe you that you had bad experiences, which is unfortunate.

I used a Surface Pro 3 for about 4-5 years for work, it got carried in my backpack every day and also probably travelled 250,000 miles on flights plus getting carted around in cities and hotels. No problems at all with build quality on that.

Eventually the cooling fan went and it was way out of spec and IT support for my job. I found a used Surface Pro 4 and used that for a year or so as well. No build quality problems on that either.

I would happily use a Surface Pro again. They're expensive so I don't own one personally and honestly have little need for a premium laptop or tablet at home. But I'd happily get one for work again if I could find an IT department that supports them lol. For work use that seems to be the biggest issue is that standard Enterprise images don't work on Surface due to display, touch interface, and some of the unique hardware. Drivers are a pain and many IT departments flat out refuse to allow employees to have computer that don't use the standard image. It's annoying, though I do understand why.
