… as in a Surface Pro 2, which released in 2013?
Yeah…don't get that. This is a better deal. That's my personal opinion at least.
This is a decade newer, more modern hardware across the board, USB C ports instead of a single USB A and miniDP. I don't even know if you can find the type covers for a 2 anymore.
It's not worth getting a used 11 year old laptop/tablet unless you have some very specific reason for it. If this Pro 9 is too expensive look for a different laptop or tablet.
I'm going to ignore the general disdain and disrespect you showed in this comment to ask a serious question:
What do you mean when you say MacBooks are miles ahead when it comes to optimization? Are you saying the chassis design, or the OS, or…? I honestly can't figure out how a computer can be miles ahead in "optimization", mainly because I don't know what that could be.
I typically use a PC desktop or laptop for 5 years or more without replacing it. In some cases I've had desktops and laptops each last 10 years. I don't understand why you'd say 2.
People replacing computers every 2 years likely due so due to wanting the "latest and greatest", to get better performance (eg better cou and gpu to play the latest games on high res displays), to keep up with the people around them, warranty expiration, or to comply with IT policies in some workplaces (mainly driven by the warranty periods).
I would argue any such people replacing computers every 2 years likely do that not just with PCs but with Macs too. I certainly know people that do that with Macs, because they want the latest Apple hardware either for fun or as a badge of pride.
If anything, upgrading every year or two seems even more predominant among Apple users. I don't know many PC people that go wild about release events like Apple folks do.
I say all of this as a loyal iPhone user. But I definitely don't upgrade annually 🙂 I hope that people that want to upgrade annually enjoy it and get their worth from it, it's just not for me.
I know probably hundreds of people that develop software on Macs. A MacBook is a pretty solid workhouse on its own, and can be brought home or to meeting rooms or on travel.
It is definitely done, I assure you 🙂
Edit: I did minimal software development myself but was a beta tester / user. The looks of confusion and horror and disdain I got from colleagues for having a Windows machine instead of Mac was crazy haha.
Also, typical setup I saw was MacBook Pro with local development for simple stuff but remoting into Linux or Unix workstations or clusters for complicated dev work or especially testing. It worked pretty well.

I fully agree with this post. I would rather buy a newer cheaper used laptop than an out of support Surface device. The Surface line is a premium brand, so more expensive than a regular laptop.

It's better to wait for the new ARM64 Surface Pro with Snapdragon Elite X chip. It will be miles faster I(even with emulation we hope this time) with the power efficiency that will finally compete with the Macs. yes. Intel chips SUCK ass, no way around this problem.
Don't even buy Surface 10 Intel Ultra... It will be marginal upgrade and you will still have the same overheating and battery problems and it will be slower than ARM64 version of Surface Pro 10 with any the native apps. Guaranteed.
the ARM64 version if delivered on its promise, it will be the first Apple Silicon-like Windows machine that will have power and LONG battery life (12+ hours), not 6-8 hours (this is garbage).
Edit: 11A said SP has real world use around 3-4 hours.

Windows guys complain about 8GB Apple RAM and $200 upgrade to 16GB. while Surface Pro comes with 8GB also and upgrade is $300
Sure, you can buy other Windows machine, go ahead. no one is stopping you. . But don't buy anymore Intel Windows machines until you see SnapDragon X elite and see if it meets your need and then some. (not for the corporate boys, no one cares about corporate, they can keep buying intel until Windows 15 since they can't even upgrade to Windows 11 yet.
Will this be under $1,000 with the keyboard cover and the pencil bundled by Black Friday?
Windows on ARM is coming on May 20. Several ARM based laptops have leaked over the past couple days (the Dell ones two hours ago). They look very sleek indeed. They will have 5x the (actual) battery life of the SP9 and 3x the speed (?).
Lenovo also has a bunch of amazing laptop deals now probably because of the ARM onslaught that's coming.
Hmmm, what do I do? What do you guys think?

I didn't want to offend too many people. I'm sure if I dimmed my surface display to be very dim and just play basic youtube I can stretch it for a long time.
I guess the rest is the same kind of BS as that original dumb marketing (or AI-) shilling 'claims', trying to sell these terribly outpriced and underperforming status quo nose rings.
Very easy now. It is made to be swapped
