Installing Lineage with a Magisk module to enable Pixel features may also be viable. Also, the Pixel 2 lineup has unlimited original photo/video backups, iirc

People buy the 8a because it costs less for most of the functionality. Cameras on Pixel to Pixel Xa have typically been basically the same, just without the telephoto. The reverse wireless charging has always struck me as a dumb feature (that I've disabled in every phone) as I've never yet come across a time when I wanted to reduce my phone's charge for something else.
From a value standpoint, for most people, the Pixel 8a is just fine, especially if they aren't comfortable or interested in refurbished models.
Yeah, I had a pixel 5a and it was awesome, but I heard of the issues with the new pixels and decided not to take a chance, and got an iPhone
Yeah, I was wary of people just complaining for no reason on forums, but the criticism was a lot. But at the same time it was 50/50, some people had no issues and then another majority had HUGE issues. I really didn't know who to believe
I'd imagine the equally good deal for the unlocked 128GB would be in high $300s. However this one has 12GB of RAM and 4x the storage. I'd say the extra $100 is justified.
I have a very silly question. Does it really require a protective case, given it's specs : "With its durable design and IP68 protection, your phone can handle water and dust[8]; it's also scratch-resistant, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus".
If so, are there any recommendations?
Device access does not matter anymore. The Five Eyes and private firms have access to all data pipelines and cloud nodes. After Congress defunded CIA/DARPA's Total Awareness domestic program the CIA's venture arm spun it out into a private company called Palantir. Unless your device is air gapped and off grid there is no point in obsessing about system updates.

If you aren't comfortable or interested in refurbished models a new Pixel 8 is readily available on eBay new for $550, if you don't want to wait for the monthly price reduction to $550 on most major retailers.
For a price difference of $50 the reduced features are not worth the savings. This coming from someone who has purchased the Pixel 3a and Pixel 5a. The Pixel a series make sense when the price difference is $100 or more, not when it is $50.
