They do this because you never really know how the weight of the vehicle is going to be distributed between the stands. It might be 50/50 or 75/25 or ???.

How much do you think cars weigh?
Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank Shake-N-Bake
2 tons is 4,000lbs. The vast majority of cars are under 4,000lbs. Even if the vehicle is 4,000lbs, you're not holding up 4,000lbs by just lifting one or two wheels. Lol. Are you guys planning to balance the car on a single one?
My car is 3,100lbs and I would feel perfectly safe using these. There are people who can lift a portion of a car off the ground. You think they're lifting thousands of pounds? Lol. They're not holding the entire weight of the car, and neither are these stands.
Stands that are advertised as meeting those standards would individually be rated to carry half the stated capacity.
So in this case, 2 tons = 4000 lbs, or 1 ton/2000 lbs each.
Practically speaking, these stands should support an average vehicle, but it's still important to understand what governs the ratings, and what they actually mean, to have the full picture.

Alternatively, the off brand "Maasdam" used to be $20 for a pair that were 3 ton capacity that looked very similar to this. Not sure when and if they'll go back down

What you should really be worried about is tipping and using these on uneven surfaces
That said, I went with jackpoint jackstands for my Chevy Bolt. Made in USA, and Super nice to be able to lift the car and place a jackstand at the same place... But cost me $500 for a pair and I spent months on the waitlist.

Wait...1 stand per axle? I'm not a mechanic, but I never would've even considered that an option. That's some serious faith in their seesaw skills.
