You got lucky. I ordered six of these 12TB drives and two were DOA. They were quickly replaced though, so goharddrive provided good service.
Put refurbished in title…

Edit: Thanks
I've had really good luck with Go hard drive. I would only buy one of these used Enterprise drives from either go hard drives or server parts deals. Out of five drives, none of them have been bad yet. And both of these companies package the drives very well. To me. theres a big difference between these two companies and buying used hard drives in general off of eBay. I've had some horrible experiences buying 4tb used Enterprise drives, over 50% have been junk. But I trust these and the warranty that helps mitigate the risk.

Just run badblocks with the four default patterns. Takes a few days but is the best test I've found.

One thing I noticed - GoHardDrives seems to wipe all smart data, ServerPartsDeal wiped some of it but not all - although the Smart info showed garbage data - I read somewhere that Seagate uses non-standard Smart data and you have to use SeaTools to verify.
I wouldn't say Seagate uses non-standard SMART data, as there is no standard. The meaning of a particular SMART attribute can vary from brand to brand or even model to model. There are a couple reasons Seagate drives tend to stand out. One is because they often report non-zero values on attributes with scary descriptions, like Read Error Rate.

The reason some values look like garbage is usually a mix of two things. Some SMART attributes actually report multiple values, using just one number. For example, the temperature attribute might report min, max, and current values. The second issue is that SMART data is reported in hexadecimal. Many programs convert these values to decimal, so they are easier for humans to read. If the program doesn't know that a drive is reporting multiple values for one attribute AND how they are split up, you will end up seeing a nonsensical number. Here's an example from a Seagate drive:

Attribute C2 - Temperature:

Dec value (what many programs report by default): 77309411360

Hex value (what the drive natively reports): 001200000020

The bold values converted to decimal are 18 and 32 respectively. These likely represent the lowest and current temperature. This is part of why people are often confused by Seagate SMART values.

I prefer HDDScan or Victoria. They will detect slow/weak sectors, badblocks will not.

I use this to do backup and doing mirror on it. That's all.

Sometimes I store blu-ray rip on it. If I lost everything, oh well, no big deal.

Curious, can I use this as a simple HDD solution in my PC? I have two SSD's — one for OS and video editing software (DaVinci), and one for the editing resources and for a handful
of go-to video games. I need a non-SSD solution for storing large raw recordings and a bunch of other video games where I don't care a ton about speed. I see people use these drives for RAID, NAS, etc… is this also an effective HDD?

I personally use badblocks but a modified version called bht

https://github.com/ezonakiusagi/bht

You can also follow Art of Server of using the this script. The video shows testing multiple drives but it is also fine running 1.

Be warned that it will take days! My 14tb has been running its test for 75 hours now and I'm still half way!

How did you order 6 drives? Ebay seems to limit orders up to 5 drives.

Two different orders. I ordered one before drives went on sale. Then I ordered five more after they were on sale.

Yes. This is just reliable as any standard consumer hard drives you'd get new. Just know that, unless you raid 1+, any hard drive used or new can lose data at any given time....

My synology DS224+ does everything you just said. I run a 4K plex server off of it and backup our photos from phone. I have two of these 12TB drives from GoHardDrive on it in RAID1. Got them for $82 each and they work perfectly. A little noisy when they are backing up so I run backups at night when we're asleep.

Yes I use a synology too. People get too excited with custom NAS until they realize 24/7 on means power consumption is key.

In oppressive countries they use VPNs to access forbidden stuff.

It never fails, there's one of you guys who don't know anything about enterprise hard drives making this same comment in every single one of these threads.

It's kind of misleading to call these "refurbished", the seller just wipes the data, they didn't still refill the helium or replace the actuators or anything like typically refurbished products. These are USED hard drives are used heavily in data centers for about 5 years and they are more than half way through their typical life. So if you are ok with the risk, then get one of these drives.
