Bought one on clearance in store as they were right by self checkout. First controller (the round dial, listing looks to have two types) blew out the second I turned it on. Tried the other one, exact same thing. Was trying to replace an old one that gave out after 8 years.

Yea, over 500 1-star reviews (30%) complaining of failing controllers and fires.

Is concerning that there are multiple one-star reviews claiming that it caused a fire; buyer beware

Yeah, be careful. I had one by Sunbeam, one of leading makers is electric blankets. I turned it on while to preheat while I left to brush my teeth. Suddenly, I smelled burning. When I ran to my bed, I saw sparks coming out of the controller. Had I been asleep, I would not be here typing this. With the blanket wrapped around me, I would've burned to death before the smoke detector activated. I now view electric blankets as death shrouds. If an expensive Sunbeam can fail for no reason, I'd be very wary of buying this.

---

That said, just throw the controller away and use this as a normal blanket. Still a bargain at $10. That's what I did with the blanket above.

There was a recall of sunbeam blankets last year due to faulty controllers.

I think you might have taken that too far based on a lot of what if's.
There are a lot of fail-safes like low voltage and the controller separated so that it breaks there and the controller and cannot shock you more than a tickle in the worst case since the coils themselves will break and disconnect the circuit.

I have tested these and put them through a lot of abuse for about 10 different types even going from 110v to 220v for international travel, only in that case the wires burnt out but didn't break the protective shielding.

Would love to see Biddeford come back with this specific obsoleted model which has been practically indestructible. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005J9CEQK

Bought many of these for gifts. Everyone still says they work after three years. Even through gentle HE washes. Very warm you can feel the wires through the flat thinner fabric. It's made to have a barrier on top or bottom. I believe they made and sold them only for Amazon. The other sellers are just re-sellers from price drops.

Reviews for this item are pretty bad. I sorted reviews newest to oldest. Read thru about the first 6 or 7 pages. Lots of bad reviews for faulty controllers, burned blankets, melted power cord, no heat or only partial heat in specific parts of blanket, etc.

Seriously why would you wrap yourself in wires when a good quality cozy blanky is all you need?

Some of these states up north go through sub zero temps in the winter.

Based on a very limited knowledge of electric blankets, my general understanding is that they will try to kill you and everyone you love.
