Musician's Friend has the ESP LTD EC-256FM Electric Guitar in See-Thru Black Cherry Sunburst for $299, with free shipping and 8% Musician's Friend rewards. This is a Stupid Deal of the Day.

This deal has been showing up every few weeks recently, but it's still a great deal on an LP style guitar that punches way above its price class. Every one I've seen has had great fretwork and tone. It has a slightly thinner body and some comfort carves.

The red/black finish rocks.

Nice, it's probably better quality than an Epiphone of similar price.
The only thing I don't like are the XJ frets.. but that's a personal preference.

I can see that. With a low action, it sure makes some guitars easier to play though.

Despite the shape, don't expect a Les Paul. it's much thinner. But $300? Excellent choice. Way better than any Epiphone under $750.

These are metal guitars, so why compare them to a Epiphone or Gibson, the shape come on people....that's like saying this guitar is way better than a squire or a fender. It's not even the same instrument at that point. (Before you respond yeah anything can be modded but out of the box this is metal).

I didn't find it to be "metal." Sure, it could play that as the pickups are hot enough, but it sounded great doing quieter styles.

I rather liked the lighter weight body and carves.

great deal, not digging the finish though. Looks like a low end epi studio finish.

I'm not saying anything against it, Undertaker. But it's a very different guitar. I've got several Gibson LP's and have owned a few ESP Eclipse, EC1000, etc. They look similar, play and sound different. Both are great...just different.

Or maybe that's how I justify having too many guitars... laugh out loud

I mean, you basically answered your own question. It looks pretty much identical to a Les Paul except for the volume/tone knob layout. Lots of people might assume it's the same style guitar without realizing that the neck profile is quite a bit different. Not everyone who looks at these deals is super knowledgeable about these details.

OK. It sounded close enough to me to pass for an LP, but I fully concede that might depend on what you're playing. I appreciate a slightly hotter pickup than vintage Gibson output, so that might color my judgment.

Have an older one. This us a great price. That red is sexy. It plays like a les paul but is lighter and has cutout. I liked that so much that I bought a les paul HP II that has same features. The LP will kick its ass but it's also 10x the pricem. The only beef I have with this that the volume pots are backwards from the switch position. Seems illogical.

Is this a pretty good beginner electric for a kid? Like 8-9 years old

I would think so. It's not as heavy as a Les Paul, but it has the Gibson short scale (24.75") which makes it easier to fret strings. The shorter scale also makes it a bit easier to reach frets for hands with shorter fingers. Only one tone and one volume control versus two of each. The neck was fairly slim. The ones I've handled might need an adjustment to the action height, to make it easier to fret, but that's a possibility with any new guitar.

You could also look at used guitars, such as an Epiphone Les Paul or even one of these.
