Is it true you can just go to any Sonic Drive In and ask to buy a big bag of their good ice?

Does anyone know if a SMALLER countertop device that keeps making ice exists? Most countertop machines have the ice melt when it isn't used within the time window. I want ice on demand at all times but don't want to repair the ice maker in our fridge.

Anyone know of anything or have suggestions?? 🫡🫡🤔
I had one that while yes the ice would melt, it would start remaking the ice before it all melted. It had a thermometer probe at the top, if ice was touching it it stoped, when enough ice melted it would start making ice again. So it was never fully empty unless I forgot to put in new water. The table top one I had was Hamilton beach and looks pretty similar to the ones posted on here often that make the bullet shaped ice.

This interesting machine's process should make clear impurity-free ice. Water from the tub is circulated over the evaporator. The evaporator chills the water to freezing. Moving water molecules stick to the cold evaporator while impurities do not. The ice builds up on the cube shaped molds of the evaporator while impurities concentrate in the pump sump.

When the ice is ready for harvest the compressor and water recirculating pump shut off. Fresh room temperature water enters and flows over the ice molds warming them then into the water sump. Also, there may be an electric heat element helping warm the mold. Ice freed from the mold falls into storage tub.

The fresh water flowing over the evaporator/mold has replaced the impurities-laden water in the sump with fresh. The water inlet shuts, compressor and pump start, and the ice making process begins again. When the bin is full the process stops.

The bin is insulated but not refrigerated. As the ice melts it is replaced with new fresh ice. The water from the melting ice, and the flush water from the sump, flows by gravity into a floor drain.

The process is actually distillation. Instead of the usual phase change of steam condensing on a cold plate into liquid water we have a phase change of liquid water turning into a solid on the subzero plates. Impurities do not freeze onto the cold surface, rather they continue circulating and concentrate in the sump.

If this machine works as advertised it's a good deal

The Husky brand from Zappa Industries makes yellow ice (and snow).

Clear ice comes from air-free water.

I make clear ice from tap water. They key is to have a mold that freezes slowly from the top down.

This will give you mostly clear ice with all the impurities driven to the bottom.

If you add a volume below the mold, then all the impurities will be driven into the bottom, leaving the ice in the mold totally clear.

depends if you can hook up your toilet's grey water output into pressurized input.

Yeah it melts but then it makes more. So you will always have some, the system works well. Only kink is that the constant humid environment means you need to drain and clean everyonce in awhile. I actually prefer this system as the ice is somewhat soft/partially thawed.

I own a machine under a different brand name but looks exactly like this, but is Black in color. I paid around $599 and I am of mixed opinions on it. First, it makes a "slab" of ice in approximately 17 minutes. I have a whole house filtration unit and my ice comes out very clear. From an empty bin to full takes several hours and turns off when a slab falls down onto a lever arm which indicates the bin is full. My only issues are that the unit seems to be poorly insulated and Ice melts quickly. When making ice it is also very loud. I have a downstairs basement bar and it's not a regular living area, so the noise isn't a big deal unless you have company over and sitting near it. Also, the amount of water usage making fresh ice, knowing it seems to be melting quickly. Higher level ice makers typically cost $2,500 to $3,500, so a few hundred bucks for this seems like a good deal, but there are tradeoffs to a quieter and more insulated machine for a lot more money.

My county had a similar ice maker in the court house. An internal part failed and flooded two levels of the court house. Make sure you are comfortable with possible water damage. The Chinese manufacturer has not responded to the insurance company request for subrogation.

Bag of ice is usually a 'secret menu' item. It's left up to the manager to carry it, so you have to ask. Expect $3 to $10 depending on location and size.
