Use a scoop of food safe citric acid. Look at ingredients of most of these cleaners and you'll see it's the same. I don't know about this particular one but you can't beat the price on Amazon for citric acid. Works on coffee maker and sink parts too!

We use citric acid from Amazon. One scoop in the bottom or fill up the soap dispenser. We also use it to clean the washing machine (clothes). However, the tablets take less storage space and perhaps more convenient to use.

Just use vinegar and baking soda. That's all you need for a sparkling dishwasher. If you have hard water, then you can use citric acid too.
I'm a fan of natural methods too, when they work. Been using vinegar and baking soda for a long time when my dishes smell funny. But it was never really that effective, even when I hand-washed the filter first.
Last month I used the Finish Dishwasher Cleaner[amazon.com] (not these tablets) and it was night-and-day. Left a great scent, completely cleaned the filter, and even lubricated my rack slides, though I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be an intended effect.

This might be a dumb question, but what measurement is the scoop you are using?
The only time I felt the need to clean my dishwasher was when I put the house up for sale.
gross?
Washing machines and dishwashers should both be cleaned periodically. You don't need to be OCD about it but a periodic refresh to remove build-up is pretty important for a machine that cleans something regularly

I don't understand. I use dishwashing detergent which does an amazing job of cleaning dishes. My dishwasher also appears to be cleaned by the same detergent. What is happening that is causing dishwashers to become dirty? I want to be sure I avoid that. Seems I'm doing a good job though.

Often times it's water content or the type of cycle a person is running. If you only ever run 1-hr or Quick Cycles, your dishwasher may not be getting hot enough during the drying cycle to dry out certain parts of the washtub or kill certain bacteria.
Just as often it's the practice of loading dishes that still have solid food particles on them. You don't need to rinse your dishes, as long as they're getting washed soon enough, but you do need to scrape them off. If it can't fit through the little holes in your spray arms, you don't want it going in your dishwasher (ie lemon seeds and pieces of sponge, noodes, etc). Vinegar or other cleaning agents won't help with lemon seeds tho

A machine that's cleaning regularly should stay clean. If you have hard water, you can get mineral build-up, but we don't.

You would think that but most (all?) cleaning machines have some filter element in it that will accumulate gunk at a disproportionate speed and need occasional cleaning and maintenance. If you don't want to clean it, then don't, but don't try to mislead others.

Mixing vinegar and baking soda looks impressive - it fizzes and bubbles. This is a reaction between an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda). But the result is a neutral mixture, which cleans about as well as plain water.

Cleans well, tub is spotless, no odor to speak of.
full cycle is 60-90minutes depending on how dirty dishes are.

Any specific brands? Or they all about the same?
