If you know where the main water line comes into your house and it's easily accessible, should only run you a couple hundred dollars on today's standards. But if it is accessible you could also do it yourself. The device comes with a spacer so you cut a section out of the main line that length plus extra for the fittings, install male threaded adapters using one of the methods I mentioned below and attach the threaded adapters that come with it and install the device. If you ever need to remove it, you just put that spacer in his place. If you're not comfortable shutting your water off at the meter or using SharkBite or PEX fittings or pro-press or using a torch and sweating the pipe yourself, then yeah call a plumber.

This is from Costco (arguably one of the most reputable retailer) and Moen (a household name that make shower and sink faucets).

Voila!
Mathematically true, however inaccurate with regard to plumbing measurements as they are performed ID, inner dimension.

OD on same rated size plumbing varies depending on type of material wall thickness.

I recommend getting a full light photo of your existing plumbing and also get an OD using calipers and take that information to the hardware store and have them match it up. Before you do that, though, almost all plumbing has measurements stamped or labeled every 12 to 24 in on the exterior of the pipe so I would start there first if you have enough length to review.

Agreed.
The determining factor when choosing what to purchase is the software preference and usable longevity of the valve. The aftermarket bolt on, like you've shared, absolutely works to open and close when the valve is new and enough actuating space is available. Failure for this or any valve happens with age and exposure to elements. Sometimes just the condensation of cold water creates issue. Bolt on, however, does not provide leak measurement nor auto shut of capability - so a purchaser of this one would be required to purchase a separate water sensor to notify you of a leak.

Best practice for all remote valves is regular testing to confirm they'll work when you need them.

Does this detect changes in pressure and auto shut off? Seem like this device just alow you shut off remotely. How would you know if there are slow leaks/not present unless there are sensors around the house?

Honestly, current plumbing system is poorly designed. It was never updated for decades.

Water supply lines should be set to OFF by default, not on. You have issues cause the water is ALWAYS on. One small leak and its $5k -$20k

Also every unit should have a main shutoff including apartments. It should be standard that everyone shuts off the water to your unit when you leave the house, etc.

You should also turn off the water to your washer when not in use. #1 and #2 cause of flooding in the home is the hose for your washer and and the plastic hose to your ice maker in the fridge.

This was included with my new build and I cannot recommend it enough. It alerts me when there is too much water being used like when my in laws came to visit and we all showered together. It gives a 5 min window to respond to the alert and silence it. If you don't respond it auto shuts off your water. Easy enough to turn it back on by a simple press of a button on the app. It also does a nightly test to check for leaks or pressure issues. Mine runs at 3 am nightly. Great device.

I just dropped a bunch of cheapo sensors everywhere leak can occur. I wouldn't rely on "pressure change" it is a marketing IMO (might be wrong here), basic leak sensors are much more usable. If you need to test for a hidden leak - you can do that with any standard water meter. If you absolutely must have this advertised pressure drop thing - https://m.vevor.com/water-leak-de...k8QAvD_BwE here is 3 times cheaper product (didn't use it, but in general vevor stuff is quite ok)

If you have a new home, you should replace the cheap plastic shutoff valves for your sink, washer, toilet etc. I can't believe new homes are built with those.

There are negatives to the moen flo. Many reviews saying that this will only last 1 year or 2. I forgot what exactly was the issue but i was under the impression that it wasn't user replaceable/fixable.

This is junk.

If you want cheap, go with the YoLink system with the bulldog "robot" valve turner.

Otherwise, go with Watts' LeakDefense or flologic.com. You'll pay 2k+ most likely, but you'll be able to actually trust it to work.

No idea if it bases off pressure change but when my pond water kept running, it alerted me and then auto shut off the water.

It ran for about an hour at 1.5gpm before Flo shut it off. This was while I was asleep at midnight, so if I didn't have this and assuming I noticed sometime during the day (high unlikely) I would have wasted a good 1 - 2K gal of water versus the 100 I wasted. It looks at your typical water usage and determines a leak based on that. I would assume if it detected a big pressure drop and continuous water flow, it would shut it off as well but hopefully that never happens lol.

If you live in Nevada, SNWA has a $200 rebate on this as well, which brings the cost down to like $230 after tax for the 1", which I assume most people have.

Is there a way for a non member to buy this with like a 10% markup or something?

My first one failed after a 2-3 years, water entered the housing likely from the pressure/temp sensor seals. Moen sent me a new one out of warranty no questions asked. I'm at 2 years on the new one and no issues. I don't have an expansion tank so it sees some pretty big pressure changes.

The flow and pressure sensors are really good and have caught a lot of small leaks like running toilets and faucets that are cracked open. I have a tiny leak im currently trying to trace down but so fare can't figure it out. The leak test passes if I block in the kitchen sink but fails if I unblock it. I can't see a thing so it's definitely a micro leak probably slowly filling up the fixture. Kind of impressive.

Keep in mind that smaller flows will take more time to trigger a shutoff. My running toilet took 20 or so min to trigger. A completely busted pipe should trigger very fast.
