That's a great price for an I3 laptop with 1080p screen, in before shrewd with their pitch fork complaining about non IPS, dim screen, non backlit keyboard blah blah blah.

Got this today for my kid at college. Had an extra tb nvme and 8gb of ram so it made sense. The smode wont release though. Pita. Easy to upgrade otherwise. Screen is dull as you would expect and I felt like 8gb really crawled. Worth the dough for its use.

Got this for the wife last time at this price. Added 8gb to the one slot and swapped out nvme to 500gb MP44L. Much snappier. She doesn't like the combo calculator and track pad. I'm not fan of the screen but it was cheap. Overall good for price. Got it out of S mode no problem.

the tn display is awful. good if you don't have good eyes tho or connected to an external
Different opinion on this. I can't stand 45 ntsc ips at all, and usually think the lowest bar would be 72 NTSC IPS, but the specific 45 ntsc tn in 17 inch model is simply the best TN screen I have ever owned in the last 20 years other than a HP work station I bought around 2012 that has a 94 NTSC TN screen on it.
It's extremely comfortable to use, way better than any garbage 45 NTSC IPS and other TN you see in the walmart. I prefer this to my MacBook Pro m3 and my glossy HP OLED. It simply looks comfortable and robust.
One more interesting thing that I never tested recently. 10 years ago these good TN panels ( I define this panel as one of the good panels) can be overclock to 100hz easily if you have a NVIDIA graphics while IPS can't be overlocked at all. During those days some people buy TN panel laptops over IPS because of this feature. Probably not the case today though.

Any reason(s) why Best Buy are not selling this (and some other products) via eBay?

great laptop for the price. got it last month. slap on a 8gb ddr4 and you have a very capable laptop for school/light use. i do admit the lcd panel isnt anything special as it has bad viewing angle and color is very washed out. but what can you expect from a $230 laptop that is not a chromebook?

Is 8 GB of RAM enough for programming?
There's a 1x SO-DIMM for you to add another stick of RAM, if you add a 16Gb RAM module, you can have 24Gb, and that should be enough for most.

The laptop on the display had a numpad on the touchpad. I thought it was a sticker one could remove, but its printed permanently. The website clearly shows the laptop with nothing on the touchpad. Theres a small numlock touch sensitive button on the top right of the touchpad, so as you swipe your finger, you can accidentally trigger the numlock pad to be off and type out numbers. I prefer the touchpad to be blank.
Wondering if the numpad on the touchpad can be disabled in the BIOS or maybe thru some other setting.

Depends on what you're programming, but yes it is. Especially if what you mean is learning to program, this is more than capable.

I know not everyone has a MicroCenter in their area, but those that do, isn't this a better deal?

At quick glance, the Best Buy deal is better.

BEST BUY PROS
$70 cheaper.
Faster processor (same gen, but... 1.2 GHz vs. 1.1 GHz)

MICROCENTER PROS
Touchscreen
Higher bandwidth via HDMI out (newer HDMI spec)

If you need a touchscreen, then yes, Microcenter is the way to go. But otherwise, Best Buy seems to be the winner.

If you're planning on running something like Docker to develop, I'd say you'd need 16GB of RAM.
