M2's use the dual chip model for any storage upgrades beyond base. M3+ I believe they went back to the dual SSD model for base storage.
The M2 is slightly faster than the M1; if the M1 is significantly cheaper than the M2 mini, get the M1 mini. That's all people need to know. If you're hammering the SSD enough that any of this SSD performance matters, you shouldn't be shopping for a $379 Mac mini, you should be getting a 16GB RAM machine with a larger SSD for even faster speeds.
Anyone wanting the best deals on current Macs (from Apple, anyway) should wait for back to school specials from Apple, where typically (but not always; deals vary) the lower end Macs get another $50 to $100 off, typically via Apple Store coupons, so for many that's almost as good as cash. That typically starts in August or so.
It's just there's no Apple Store, Microsoft Store, Cost Corporation, MicroCenter, Trader Joes, etc. Which is fine, but when these stores have in-person only sales....welp, that's life. They have this amazing online catalog, massive brand recognition, etc. It's just they're allergic to putting postage on a box and handing it off to the carrier. It's not that they won't make any profit, it's that they won't make ENOUGH profit so they don't bother.
(Good luck getting one of those I-Phones serviced without going to Fruit Basket store. It's just not worth buying.)
Yes, it's even better if you live near a store, for trivial handoffs and carry-ins, but their remote and mail-in support is also outstanding.

It's not even playing Netflix because there's a TV in that same room.
It was a $99 upgrade after I already use the M1 Mac Mini for almost 2 years so it was like renting the M1 Mini for $5 a month so far so I upgraded it to M2 Mac Mini same 8GB config.
Most of the time my machines are idle
But when I work that 1 hour, I need it to be fast enough so I can slack off after!
Potentially, you can get a latest version of Mac mini from apple.com with education price & back-to-school promotion for around $399. ($599 - $100) and maybe $100 gift card or apple EarPods ?
