Solid deal but OOS for me. You can get the M2 mini from Apple student store for $500 without any student verification required.

These consume so little power at idle (not to mention being very efficient under load) which make them very useful for running background tasks 24/7.

If I remember correctly, the base M1s have dual SSD chips giving them double read/write performance vs. base M2s which are single chips, so in scenarios that require a lot of SSD read/write's the M1s are actually faster.

M2's use the dual chip model for any storage upgrades beyond base. M3+ I believe they went back to the dual SSD model for base storage.
Good lord all this needs to just die.

The M2 is slightly faster than the M1; if the M1 is significantly cheaper than the M2 mini, get the M1 mini. That's all people need to know. If you're hammering the SSD enough that any of this SSD performance matters, you shouldn't be shopping for a $379 Mac mini, you should be getting a 16GB RAM machine with a larger SSD for even faster speeds.

Anyone wanting the best deals on current Macs (from Apple, anyway) should wait for back to school specials from Apple, where typically (but not always; deals vary) the lower end Macs get another $50 to $100 off, typically via Apple Store coupons, so for many that's almost as good as cash. That typically starts in August or so.

Same with Cost Corporation posts. Nearest one to me is only 3.5 hours away. And no, I'm not in the middle of nowhere. There's a walmart 20 mins away, many local stores and national chains, etc.

It's just there's no Apple Store, Microsoft Store, Cost Corporation, MicroCenter, Trader Joes, etc. Which is fine, but when these stores have in-person only sales....welp, that's life. They have this amazing online catalog, massive brand recognition, etc. It's just they're allergic to putting postage on a box and handing it off to the carrier. It's not that they won't make any profit, it's that they won't make ENOUGH profit so they don't bother.

(Good luck getting one of those I-Phones serviced without going to Fruit Basket store. It's just not worth buying.)
Apple has the best technical support in the business. It's not just me saying so; Consumer Reports puts them on top every...single....year, in every single review.

Yes, it's even better if you live near a store, for trivial handoffs and carry-ins, but their remote and mail-in support is also outstanding.

And what performance difference, if any, did you notice?

I didn't. It was just a 8GB machine to do lots of chrome tabs (maybe 10-20) and Citrix.

It's not even playing Netflix because there's a TV in that same room.

It was a $99 upgrade after I already use the M1 Mac Mini for almost 2 years so it was like renting the M1 Mini for $5 a month so far so I upgraded it to M2 Mac Mini same 8GB config.

Most of the time my machines are idle Smilie. Maybe 1 hour an day if that that I am making my machine work but the rest of the time the CPU/GPU is pretty idle.

But when I work that 1 hour, I need it to be fast enough so I can slack off after!

I love when people don't read the other comments before they reply to me. I have zero ways of getting out there. It's pointless which is why I skip over microcenter threads. It would take me ten days to get out there and ten days to get back and Fairfax is the closest one.
People often reply to reading the entire thread….

I'm waiting on the m4 and what sort of AI stuff they announce. I need a new always-on mini to power a home server kind of deal alongside a synology NAS. Want something that will blaze through AI tasks for stuff like voice transcription

Very enticing price. But then do i really need it ? Probably not, was thinking use this as a Content cache server(it great for household with many apple devices), And maybe media stream.

Potentially, you can get a latest version of Mac mini from apple.com with education price & back-to-school promotion for around $399. ($599 - $100) and maybe $100 gift card or apple EarPods ?

How do you plan to engage that / those functions? In other words, what software will you use so that it becomes better than, say, a $150 N100 CPU 16/500 config from Amazon running Linux + docker + plex + homebridge + (endless list of docker apps....). ?
