False information, the N305 would be just slightly faster than the intel i5-8500. The N100 is only half the speed, but I agree is way more efficient. So I would say this is a good deal because you are getting a lot more expandability. There are 4 ram slots, 1 x 3.5" HDD cage, 1 M.2 SSD slot and 1 x M.2 wifi slot that you install a for wireless. I had purchased 1 from the last deal.

Although you can get a N100 box with a smaller footprint, you may not be able to upgrade the ram or wifi card. I ran into that myself and decided to return it for that reason. I think each has their own strengths.

They're exaggerating a bit.

Most of the N100 boxes are barebones, so you're probably looking at $250 to get it fully running.

Over long term use, though, you're saving a ton on electricity.

You're joking. Passmark has N100 benchmark at 5,550 while a 3ghz i5-8500 is 9,561. The N100 is a lot closer to a i5 4670k that came out over a decade ago. It does use less power than a 8th gen desktop cpu, but it's also much less powerful.

You'll get similar performance to an n100 while drawing 4x more power with these. Meanwhile an n100 is about the same price (or n305 if you want perf for more money)

True. CPU bench: i5-8500=9.5k; N100=5.5k but N100 supports new H.266 video compression standard that YT, streamers will be all going 2 so powerful video performance.

If u need expandability, long term Support, go with Dell. I imagine average user would b happier with N100 minipc with its wifi, if aware that if anything goes wrong, it s likely a throw-away.

Does anyone know if AMEX Dell deals trigger for this site? I have a $50 off $100. I'm questioning because the URL is "dellrefurbished" and not something like "refurbished.dell.com" or something.

Ignore the cpu benchmark people. Nobody should be buying this for "raw compute"

I'm a huge fan of 8/9 gen for Plex. The i5 and higher can transcode 4k for local play in Plex. They do everything I need on a daily basis.

Do you want barebones n100 and spend a little more: you save on electricity and get a newer cpu that has some newer codec support. You lose out on expandable options.

Do you want the 8/9 gen: has ram already, you can add an extra card or two to the pcie and buff it up a bit (extra nvme cards for example)

False information, the Optiplex 3070 only has 2 ram slots (DDR4-2400/2666). The NVMe slot is M.2 2280 (PCIe 2.0 x4) and the WiFi is M.2 2230.

Although they're a bit more expensive, I think the refurb Precision workstations are much more interesting. In addition to a i7-8700 and 32 GB of RAM and more, it came with a Quadro P2000 and a pair of 6-pin connectors on the PSU if I want to put in a proper gaming card.

Admittedly $300 when on sale, but still in some ways a better deal than buying one of these SFF machines and paying to deck it out.

From an IT perspective, don't go below 9th gen for Windows 11 compatibility and don't go i3... ever.
i5 9th gen is cheapest I'd recommend currently.
What's wrong with 8th Gen? Isn't performance between 8th and 9th pretty similar?
