I believe if you don't want AppleCare, you can still buy the device and call Apple and have it removed from your account and get a refund. This has been mentioned on previous posts, but I have no experience with us.

For TMO, you just need to have a debit card on file. You can pay with CC before your auto pay debit is scheduled.

If you go onto the Costco website, there is a opportunity to trade in your device. They will not count the value of your device against the purchase price. They will send you a Costco card.

Does it cover loss and theft? Theft is about the only protection I'd need when traveling abroad. I've never broken a phone, but have come close to losing or it getting stolen.

Edit: it does not, so useless to me.

Call up Apple support and in the end they'll refund you to your bank account. They don't do this often, so you might have to call couple of times.

A $40-$100 unlock phone can handle everything but why spending $1000?

I can't believe the latest and greatest from Apple still starts at 128gb. I know, they want to sell you an iCloud subscription, but I refuse to give in to that

You might be able to upgrade to AppleCare+ with Loss & Theft by contacting Apple. In the past, I've always been able to add AppleCare+ after purchasing an iPhone (I've always done it within 14 days, but don't know cutoff), so I would imagine upgrading would similarly be allowed. Maybe contact Apple and ask if it's important to you?

wish they offered trade ins for unlocked phones
All iPhones are unlocked now. It's the carriers that re-lock them IF you are on a carrier payment program for the phone. If you pay for the phone in-full the phone is unlocked. Depending on which carrier you are with though you may have to request the phone be unlocked again.

AFAIK, no matter how you pay or finance your phone purchase at Costco you get a Costco GC based on the the phone plan and phone you get.

I am new to iphones and i learn more on slickdeals because people summarize much better here.
If we don't need apple care, and go through t-mobile warranty, is that a better deal? I heard t-mobile will just give you a new phone if it cracks/breaks, vs apple care will try to fix and you are without a phone during that period?

Also with Care+ There are still fees?

Service fees and deductibles at a glance
Incidents covered

Screen or back glass7 damage

$29

Other accidental damage

$99

Theft or loss

$149

For most people that is plenty. 256GB is only $100 more if you need it and a 50G iCloud plan is a whole $1 per month. Also iCloud includes some nice security perks well worth $1/mo alone. I have a 512GB Pro Max and barely use more than 256GB only because I like warehousing my photo and videos on my phone -- going back over ten years. I backup on my Mac, not iCloud, but making backups isn't "free" regardless of whether you do it locally or in the cloud. And if you backup locally you need at least one backup of your backup in an alternate physical location.

This is a dumb question. I've not bought a phone in a while, and I've never bought one that was unlocked. So if I currently have Verizon, I can buy this phone, and then how do I get it set up with all my account information? It looks like the new iPhones don't have sim cards. What do I do to activate it? Can I do it all online, or do I need to take it into the store?

I've been watching for price drops on the unlocked iPhone 15 (no contract) for about 6 months. This is the first I've seen since Black Friday, when Apple offered a gift card with purchase (I think it was $100, or maybe $50).

Anyways, as others have noted we are quickly approaching the release of the iPhone 16 (anticipated September 2024). At this point, I think it makes sense to wait, as prices on the 15 should come down a bit more once 16 hits the market.

You are supposed to be able to do it from home, and you would ideally have another way of communicating with the representative (internet call, home/alternative phone, etc).

HOWEVER, I have had issues activating from home twice. It's a major headache when this happens. In my case, I was left without a functional phone (both old and new) until I could make it to a store for help.

So, I've painfully learned to order the phone and bring it in to the store, at my convenience, to activate. That way I know I'm leaving with a functional phone.
