Seller includes an adapter in case you run into this issue. I bought the 12tb model from them, and it's currently in my NAS now.

FWIW, The model WUH721414ALE604 has power disable pin 3 support, which may not play nicely with NAS servers. There are ways around it, google "hack on the SATA connector pin #3"

E604 = 512e SATA 6Gb/s + Power disable pin 3 support + no encryption

Newegg will go out of their way to protect and enable shady/shitty sellers, and their support is terrible. Though this particular seller is fine, I'd try to find their listings somewhere else rather than support Newegg in any way.

More like a used condom... the reseller do not actually replace any parts like actuators, motor bearings, or refilling the helium.
These parts never fail. You better talk about something you understand, like the one you started with...

y'all are crazy with these mechanical drives, absolutely frying in datacenter server racks for years
Datacenter racks are much more likely to have adequate cooling that the laundry room my server lives in.

Yep - I've had more new drives fail than decommissioned used. I also have a couple Maxtor SAS drives that I just removed from service, with 16 years of service time, and they still checked out fine in HD Sentinel stress testing, and have no bad bearing noise. The high-endurance/dwpd SSDs at half the age that were removed at the same time have used up most of their reserved space from NAND wearing out.

Drives from servers located in a datacenter run much cooler than anything I have at home, including my 4u array servers with quieter fans. Very unlikely to have been frying. They'll be chugging along at 35C in a datacenter, but in an open air USB dock, the same drive can jump to 60C+ under load. Even higher in hotswap bays in a tower case that doesn't 't have forced-air cooling for those bays. I know which environment I'd rather trust.
Yea when using a dual usb dock I just use an old 120mm fan powered via usb with 5->12v boost adapters sold on Ali. Set on top blowing down with foam or silicone bumper spacer, usb is weak so the fan is slower and it works out.

Spacer https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...58914.html
fan grill https://www.aliexpress.us/item/22...09237.html
35mm m3 https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32...44910.html

Running drive without active cooling is asking for it.

I bought two "Seagate Exos X20 16TB SATA HDD ST16000NM000D" for my NAS from same provider. Both of them didn't spin. I believe it is the same SATA POWER DISABLE feature. I tried the hack (disable PIN 3 with special tape) but never work. So I have to return them.

If you buy the drive for NAS, think again before buying it.

I can't say for certain but according to this [westerndigital.com]

The SATA models of Ultrastar DC HC530 do not offer this feature

Refurbished hard drive is a like a condom with a tiny hole in it. The chance is still there they both won't work Smilie…… I wouldn't dare store important data unless it's in RAID configuration in NAS and they're striped so if one goes, you still OK…
Striped RAID (RAID 0) is the last thing you'd want. It has no redundancy and any drive failing takes out the whole array. You either want Mirrored RAID (RAID 1) or some form with parity.

Maybe a dumb question, but... here goes.

If I use this (or another hard drive), how long should I expect it to be safe as a functioning drive if I back up stuff and stick it on a shelf?

I have an older WD or Seagate that I did that with, and it wont even spin up now.

Thanks
No one knows. Don't believe anyone claiming to. Hard drives can die at any time. It could fail after one hour or it could last decades.

Yes, it should be usable in either of those situations.

Except the smart data comes back as saying they've never been above 40C, absolutely frying. And no, they didn't clear the smart data on the drives I got.

Any advantages of this drive vs the Ultrastar 10gb deal posted previously (minus the capacity)?

The eBay listing comes with a one year Allstate warranty so it might be worth the extra $9 even without the coupon.
Can you explain to me why the Allstate one is better? I ask because I see it already has a 5 year warranty.
