Kind of ruins the point of replaceable filters when the filters alone cost more than the entire device including filters. Still a good deal if these work as effectively as life straws.

Thanks for leading me into the search, op! But I think I'm going with the personal straw https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SYYQ...etail_page which is a 5 stage filter (has an extra course filter) compared to this 4 stage at 50% off, somewhere around $16.5 if you subscribe to enough other things or $19.5 if you don't. Down side to the personal though is that it doesn't look like you can replace filters... Good enough as a backup for my go bag, though.
It will be interesting to see how this compares to the sawyer squeeze which seems to be the thing I see most on the trail.

No kidding. Not trusting my health to some cheap Chinese knock off. There are a few things you make sure are unquestionably reputable and this is one of them.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but supposedly these use the same filter as life straw. Life straw may have had a patent in the beginning but I've heard these are basically the same

It doesn't matter, it's just a brand and the lifestraw even proves how cheap these things are to make by forced donation.

I have the 6L grav filter of this brand. Works fine with proper maintenance. Used for a week on AT last year and doing again here in about 2 weeks.

This isn't a bad brand. They sell a lot of reverse osmosis filters. They're the Anker of the water filters. Great value in my opinion. This company makes ro membranes, the heart of many water systems. I have not tried this product, but they have a good reputation.
