So, I'm not sure Paul Reed Smith, the expensive electric guitar salesman who believes in magic, is someone that you should consider to be a trustworthy authority on the topic.

Now what he talks about with wood choices affecting tone does make sense. If you look at an acoustic guitar, you can take the same model guitar made with the same sides and back, but if you put a spruce top on it the guitar sounds very different than the same guitar with a mahogany top. It also stands to reason that a guitar made out of Aluminum (see Fender 1994 Anniversary Stratocasters) sound different than the same model made out of wood. So if that is the case, wood choice can affect tone. Balsa wood is going to have different properties than maple. But then, he also says that the Danelectro Jimmy Page played, that was basically made out of cardboard, had a very unique sound to it.

Harley Benton just released the ST-Modern Plus guitars with incredible specs (strat/superstrat style). Not sure if they'll be releasing a tele-style series in the near future. Worth waiting if you are not in the market for a tele right now.
