No thanks. Google gimped it of a couple features that made it useful, and the microphone is terrible. No longer call out for recipes to have it presented and read to you while cooking. No longer able to call your other home devices individually, have to use "broadcast" all the damn time.
Somehow this unit is nearly non-functional for streaming podcasts.
My wife was hoping to do that from her modern Pixel and it just... doesn't work, the app stops immediately. I was blown away this was an issue and quickly Googling it after the fact shows this is a just a known feature of this unit.
Do not buy!!! Google has consistently neutered features in the Nest hub product line for years. Buying into this ecosystem is throwing money down the drain. Alexa is "okay", but honestly I would save your money and wait for a downstream AI hub system in a few years, the market is terrible for them right now.

Is this decent to use as a clock and smart speaker?

Not really IMO, as an alarm clock it sucks as if it loses power (or internet FWIR) it doesn't go off. Even if the power comes back on (not sure about internet). As a speaker, it's weak. If you don't need the display, invest in a nice smart speaker elsewhere. Don't burn your money here.
