The lowest I've seen with an EDU discount is $998. Looks like Sony is clearing up inventory to make way for the new Sony A7 V. My prediction is it will remain at 33 MP, but improved IQ, same 5.69M dot EVF, same LCD screen as A7R V, ai chip like A7c ii, better video capabilities.

A7 IV might come down to 2k price ($1.5k with edu) and the new A7 V will be at $2,498.00 or more.

At the same time they might announce an A1 ii with global shutter. Also A7S IV with a higher MP to be able to shoot 8k. I am predicting this summer or by Oct.

edit: price and A1 ii

LMAO. This is not an "entry" level camera. It was pro level when it was released and still is today.

Absolutely. And this price is a steal. They go for this price used in marketplace. The eye autofocus is still very good. Better than my recent Fuji body. These are durable and reliable cameras. If I didn't have several A7IV bodies I'd consider getting this as a backup. I'd highly recommend. it's entry level considering today's modern tech, but I'm sure there are several pros who stick with what they are used to and has worked for them. Like most people I like having the latest and greatest but if all I had was this my work would probably look just as good.
Seriously, are people actually reading other's comments? As it has already been mentioned, this is not a steal since it has been lower than this. Do you work for Sony or something?

I say get this if you are planning to shoot just photos. Most of the a7iv improvements were to video. And even then if you are just shooting auto for video or no picture profile you can get away with this. The main reason a7iv is better for video is due to slog3 10 bit vs the 8 bit on this. If you don't know anything about that or plan to do any color grading etc then you will be happy with this one.

Are these still worth buying in 2024? The price seems right but the body is several years old now.
if you are asking this question then yes. no one really needs an a7v. people who need a9iii or a1 know it already. as for a7iv or riv. a7iv is great if price is right. a7riv don't really recommend over riii anyway.

I'm gonna enroll for some culinary classes in the fall.

Shame, I'll probably miss out on some good deals.

Can't really blame the general crowd for grouping all tech. The general rule is your previous tech becomes obsolete after 3 or 4 years.

Cameras and more importantly lenses don't fall into this group. I think of them like sound. In a 8 by 10 photo they have maxed out what we can see a long time ago. The biggest changes I've noticed with the new cameras are quality of life features. Basically finding ways to make using the camera easier.

It is actually a sad day when a good lens reaches its end of production. For me, each lens is very unique. What some might see as flaws others have used these features to capture things in such ways that other lenses can not match. For me, this comes with working with the lens as it were my only one. Spending a month or possible more with only that one.

TLDR:

Get a body and a decent lens. It doesn't have to be the latest or the most expensive lens. In fact, you should probably avoid both. Expensive lenses are generally heavy. I personally enjoy looking at 1000s of photos taking with a lens before making a purchase.

It's not a matter of whether this is obsolete or not. It's a matter of whether this is the right price. This has been lower in the past and will be lower again.

better wait for z6 iii releasing in few days before taking any decision. may cost a bit more but get latest rather than using 6 year old product. if it was $500 then its different

I still take fabulous pictures with my + 10 y/o a6000, and have minimal complaints about it.

The pictures you will miss by not buying are worth more than a few hundred bucks. besides, when you start buying good lenses, you'll realize the bodies are negligible.

Yes, but cameras like refrigerators or TV where technology doesn't change much. Yes, changes exist in newer models however the these are not significant. You can still get 90 % out of them compared to newer models . Golden rule for all cameras is Buy cheapr body and spend more on lense and if you follow major photographers, they all have secondary gear which is usually older model and they get amazing pictures out of them.

And here I'm still with my old Canon 5D Mark III. Been wanting to jump over to a Sony camera if only for the face detection feature, but not now. I only take pictures of my family and for fun.
