This is a great price on a stellar game that will give you a TON of playtime on it. I think I'm close to 70 hours right now, and once I beat it I plan to replay it at a higher difficult. It really is a fantastic game and if you're waiting to save $10 you're just doing yourself a disservice (unless you're focused on another game and wouldn't even start this if you did get it).
Really want this game, but at sub-$30 pricing. Atlus games, at least in my experience, are very hit or miss regardless of quality. Love their Persona series, Dragons Crown was phenomenal, but Odin Sphere and Grand Kingdom were absolutely too grindy and too light on story.
Not sure if you played the original Odin Sphere on PS2 or the Leifthrasir remake. The original was grindy as hell, true--but Leifthrasir was phenomenal. They took a bunch of what they learned from Dragon's Crown and applied it back to Odin Sphere.
In addition, you're gonna get at least 60 hours out of Unicorn Overlord, and plenty more if you're the type who likes to do sidequests. I don't think it's gonna drop below $40 for at least a couple months, given that it only came out in, what? March?

I hated Odin Sphere for the story. All that work and game design just for the most blank and generic resolution possible. 😔

I'm 10 hours into the game and enjoying it a lot. I would say the story is probably pretty light like Odin Sphere. Never heard of Grand Kingdom which I don't think is an Atlus game either. Vanillaware games has become a must for me because of how unique each is (even I was neutral on Odin Sphere's story). While I'll ignore the whole price = playtime since that's personal preference and understandable if you have a massive backlog, its a really solid tactical game. And so far, they haven't done any cash grab dlcs so unlike Infinite Wealth's ng+ and P3R's expansion pass, you pay just for the game through and through.
There's the demo if you're on the edge of buying it which I think is a decent amount of time to see how the gameplay works. And also 13 Sentinels that is heavy on the story, light on the gameplay. If the RTS gameplay interests you in the slightest, Unicorn Overlord would fill in that role easily.

Yeah, I don't care much about playtime vs dollar value. It's more about getting a good game without fluff, and Vanillaware can be pretty bad about it. I bought Dragons Crown on the three systems it released on because even with the grind at later levels it was just a good game on all other fronts. Not so much with Odin Sphere.
People were hyping up the Odin Sphere remake like it was their best work and while it was gorgeous to look at, I just didn't enjoy it at all.

I played the remake coming off of how much I enjoyed Dragons Crown. I think part of the reason I didn't enjoy it was because I was wanting to scratch the DC itch and it just didn't reach those highs for me. I did platinum it, but it's probably one of my more disappointing completed games.
It was definitely gorgeous though, and that's the same selling point Unicorn Overlord is giving me.

I didn't play those other games so I don't know what to tell you. You already have people saying how good it is so... I guess take that for what it's worth, or don't.
Unicorn Overlord and Balatro has been consuming my 2024 when I have that rare opportunity to game. Though, Unicorn Overlord might be one of the funnest games I've played in a long time.
The Switch version plays this game perfectly and the art style is fairly unique. Story has been okay, but I'm not one to get very hung up on stories. Gameplay has to stand out a little more than anything as I like to tune out the world with some music and just numb the mind to some games. That being said, the game paces a pretty entertaining story that makes cut-scenes and dialogue parts actually worth while.
There will often be times where I just can't put this game down. So, $40 for this is honestly a steal especially if you're a Switch Owner.

The game studio Developer is Vanillaware games. Atlus is the publisher, not the game developer. Vanillaware president George Kamitani was at capcom arcade during their 1990's arcade beat em up peak heyday. Vanillaware gameplay feels very rewarding to me.
Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed dragon's crown pro. then enjoyed 13 sentinels too on a $5 SD sale & I actually enjoyed 13 sentinels' gameplay feedback loop much more than the visual novel story. Despite 13's real time strategy RTS graphics being chonky, the gameplay was similar to dragon's crown stat padding skill tree towards destroying specific enemy types. Both games were then infused with fantastic hand drawn watercolor stylized animation (all Vanillaware games have spectacular hand drawn watercolor looking art). I'll buy unicorn at $25 to support Vanillaware as much as I can, just b/c of backlog.

I recommend anyone is on the edge download the demo. I played through the demo and it was a great experience. The difficulty feels low though, not sure if it's because I haven't gotten to the core of the game yet.
Would there be any difference in playability between Switch and XB? Buying for my son but I've heard some switch games can be weird or glitchy.
That tends to be the issue at Launch but often after a patch or 2 most games are very good. Even games like No Mans Sky, Red Dead, Witcher 3 all play well on switch. They play better on other systems but the ports have been very good as of late.

The difficulty scales up as you progress. Also, there are multiple difficulty settings.
