Would have been quite a good game if the story wasn't so lame.

The story does kinda peter out at the end, it's a very basic JRPG template but since you can do some stuff out of order it feels a bit disjointed. That being said, the gameplay is FANTASTIC and really scratches the classic Ogre Battle itch that really has not been around for 20-odd years

I agree. The gameplay was meh to me, the tactical combat is not very involved. The animation and 2D-HD art is amazing, a high point for the game, but the story couldn't keep me going nor could the gameplay.

This was my GOTY last year for sure. My biggest complaint is that you get too many characters, including new ones super late into the game, and you just don't have a way to reasonably use them in battle, and you have to go out of your way to see their character development. They should have given you fewer characters, and/or let you create additional squads, even if they limit the number of squads you can deploy.

Granted, it's not for everybody. You get literally dozens of characters who each have their own equipment and "tactics" which gives you control over the characters' behavior, like FFXII's gambit system. Equipment often gives characters extra moves, which you often should incorporate into the unit's tactics. If micromanaging equipment and tactics sounds like a nightmare, I really don't know if this game is for you. You'd probably do just fine on a lower difficulty if you didn't engage too heavily with it, but I personally LOVED it and spent a solid half the game or more in the menus, setting up equipment and tinkering with tactics.

There were some really creative builds in the "PvP" portion of the game using many of the endgame characters. As soon as I unlocked those late game characters, I couldn't wait to try them out (multiple foxgirls are crazy and angel shields are super annoying). I probably spent a hundred or so hours creating different builds to counter the current meta, and it's always fun to see other people get beat by your teams. However, the "ladder" is exploitable and with no real rewards other than being matched up with people of relatively the same skill level, it can get tiresome fighting the same people and then losing because of RNG.
