It shows an optical drive in the picture but the description says no optical drive?

Not a PC gamer at all, but my wife, who used to play Sims when she was a kid, wants to play that again. Would this be good for that at all, or is that still too much for this system?
The first edition of The Sims is really designed for Windows XP - you can build a XP box extremely cheap in something like a Optiplex 7010 SFF. It will cost you about $100 all included and you'll need to know a little about working in PCs. It's probably easier than buying a big old XP machine.

"Stock images may not represent exact product.
Please read the product configuration and description details on this page."

If the configuration details say no optical drive, it won't have an optical drive.

Is there no HDMI port? It shows two display ports and the hookup guide shows a HDMI going into a blank.
There is no HDMI built in to the motherboard for stock photos, but there is the possibility that there is an HDMI add-on that is plugged in to a port on the motherboard. I got a 7070 SFF that didn't say or show anything about having HDMI in the configuration info, but it did come with the HDMI add-on included.

If looks don't matter, one might be able to put a hole in the case to get access to the sata and power connector (if there is one) and hook up an 3.5 big data drive or maybe two, running at sata speeds.
Probably need a sata and power cable extender.
No need for anything fancy, there are two LP expansion slots so you can knock out one of those. The HDD tray caddy is usually pretty cheap to get online (typically $10 USD or less) if needed so that's not that big of a deal getting one in. Internally, SATA data is handle as normal, but SATA power is handled by the motherboard, so you'd need a splitter in addition to an extension if you were to run something outside the case.

Plenty for 16 camera Blue Iris server?
Look for comparison notes from ipcamtalk or others with a i5-8500 ..

Remember with proper tuning you can get better performance, so check blue iris tuning notes. ( iirc direct to disk ).

In general starter recommendation is i5-8500 boxes like this one. Downside in this case is the limit of 3.5" hdd space in the dell sff boxes.

My guess is as long as you tune blue iris and do not do heavy ai should work fine for 16 cameras.

Now if you want 60 fps at 8mp .. that means a lot more bandwidth the box has to process vs 15 fps at 8mp

Don't count on it. Expect to have to use a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter.

Do these have a wifi slot inside? I forgot what they call that slot, but it is a dedicated wifi slot. And room for another drive inside?

Don't count on it, sure, but I have seen them have HDMI or even USB-C Alt Mode ports that Dell Refurbished never lists in the configuration. It just depends on each batch.

Alternatively, one could buy the Dell modules to add HDMI or USB-C Alt Mode ports ($20-$40 depending on source), or add in a cheap LP GPU. Personally, I still have a variety of older LP GPUs that I pulled from non-functional SFF business computers specifically in case I want to add HDMI to a unit.

Yes, there is an M.2 2230 slot for adding a wifi card.

Oh sweet. The dogs shelter I volunteer at has a terrible PC. It runs Windows 11 so you'd think it's got decent hardware, but lord have mercy it's awful. 2 core 2 threads. Who in their right mind would make such a terrible PC.

In for one.

It can be upgraded to Windows 11, almost all intel processers from 8th generation on can upgrade due to including a TPM module with the processor.

As for pros or cons for running plex... something to keep in mind is that Dell SFF pcs are pretty limited on storage. According to the Service manual the 3431 SFF has one M.2 slot and two SATA ports (one is normally used for ODD if present). Due to the tool-less nature of Optiplex and Precision SFF, you are also limited in your options of securely installing your storage, and depending on what drive tray is included you will be generally limited to that form factor.

Long story short, depending on your storage needs the 3431 might be difficult to work with, processor and memory will be more than adequate at least.
Thank you.
I'm guessing that an external would not be the best solution but will it be workable?
