$170 is 44.5% of this deal…not insignificant

It's a relative thing. If one is thinking that the screen can be better that takes away from the experience. But if one never even had a handheld, the experience is awesome. I'm still in awe at the LCD, so OLED will always be there as something to look forward to and available if I decide I want more. But I'm honestly happy with the LCD and haven't lost that feeling of satisfaction. One of the secrets of staying happy as a SD'er is being happy with less, as constantly desiring more ends following the law of diminishing return as far as our complacency.

Great deal! Affordable and great portable console. Wish soon will see the same price for Rog Ally Z1 Extreme.

I agree with the other poster - it's not a good lcd screen, doesn't cover much of the rgb spectrum and doesn't look good.

If you're happy with it, that's awesome, but I didn't like the lcd screen and wanted to upgrade to the oled when it came out.
we're in around 300 , you're in around 600+. Let that sink in.

Ugh, the sale price convinced me to get one. Almost pulled the trigger then started watching videos of the OLED, and then a $300 purchase turned to $550. Valve got me.

I'm new to PC gaming and steam. I just finished modding Fallout 3 and New Vegas on my new PC, if I buy this can I play the modded version or would it be vanilla direct from steam vs my PC?
i just did Fallout 4 with a ton of mods and New Vegas as well. There are plenty of guides. It's not for the weak of heart (think of the Deck when you're not doing the 'just buy game in steam and download' as old-school MS-DOS autoexec.bat/config.sys tweaking), but once you have it working and figure out the directory structure it's great.

I immediately set up samba sharing on the deck and VNC for desktop mode just to help get stuff to/from the device.

also i saw someone mention the touchpads and that reminded me another amazing feature of the deck is the insane amount of controller customization you can do. radial menus via the touchpads changes everything.

whats amazing is they cant sell through them even at these prices lol. otherwise why would they know for sure they arent even going to sell out by jul 11, like 3 weeks from now. that tells me they know there is little demand for steam deck even at bottom of the barrel prices.

it's almost tempting at this sub 300 price, but the 1 hr battery life and inability to play destiny due to valve's greed puts me off. at that point it's the world heaviest paperweight. at the end of the day i dont need more useless junk laying around. and for emulation, it's laughably bad compared to a small cheap chinese retro handheld because it's so huge/overkill/nasty display etc.

the size and bat life of the deck is such it's not really a portable. and i dont see the appeal for home use. it might be good for steam enjoyers playing 2001's mascot steam favorite counter strike in moms basement.

The Rog Alley non z1 extreme edition has been available for open box around 300 a few times I believe,. And is a much better deal since it is a real windows PC (can dock it for desktop use, play all the popular gamers lke Destiny etc). it's also much smaller. But it still has the 1 hr battery life problem. to solve that you gotta get the $800 Ally X...that is the true king. of course you pay for it but still a better deal imo.
spoken like someone who knows the steam deck is better than the ROG Big Grin

Oh, is the 64gb a nvme drive? I thought it was built in and non-removeable...
You can buy a new 2230 and then an NVME enclosure that can be used for cloning. Once you get those 2, all you need to do it clone the 64GB drive to the new 2230 drive then install it to the Steam Deck and happy gaming afterwards.

Guides are everywhere for how to do this.

What this price cut tells me is Valve is having a very difficult time moving these. I'll wait for a similar sale on the OLED models.

The Steam Deck is one of my tech purchases over the last 2-3 years that I feel like I truly got my money's worth, and I paid retail for the 256 LCD version.

here's where you'll fail. all of us are taking advantage of valve's big money investment into the unknown. They produced big batch product orders not fully knowing the demand, or the state of the economy, or the level of competition (and the impetus to improve the thing to compete, thus making the olders models no longer top of their line) Once they get rid of these surplus units, they now know their demand quite well based on sales data, and will make sure the supply meets the demand at a specific price that they want to get. On these, they must take what they can get at a price that will move, but there won't be surplus units going forward. I figured all this out merely by noting that the steam oleds sell for the same price on ebay used as new from valve (this is due to int'l factors, po box shipping limitations, various reasons why people want/need to buy on ebay vs the official retail website). If they're selling at that price, you gonna be waiting 2-3 years to touch some sort of savings equivalent to what is being offered here.

Steam Deck is the best budget emulation machine ever.
Also Proton is so good now, most games just work.

I will 100% buy Steam Deck 2. Valve has made me a fan

I have been playing D4 with this and it works great. I'm sure the OLED is better but I am not that concerned with it. Baldur's Gate 3 is next...
They both work great on Deck (OLED and LCD). It's a great machine and 720/800 is fine for smaller screen. If you want to really expand library on the cheap, look at XBOX GamePass and get XBplay on Steam for like $5. That'll let you stream games from the cloud, even without an XBox. Can try super cheap for a month and there are ways to lower monthly cost if you're in it for the long haul. If you do get an XBox, you can local stream and I do that with D4 all the time for better performance/graphics/battery life - works amazingly well

You don't need to buy an app for Xbox game streaming to work on the Steam Deck, these directions worked fine for me:

Yeah, was just browsing BestBuy and saw this. A bit too expensive for me. I'm thinking something along the lines of https://slickdeals.net/f/17571021-1tb-inland-tn436-m-2-2230-nvme-ssd-49-73-microcenter-in-store-only but sadly it's not available in my area.
I got the 2tb sn740 off AliX for under $100. I know AliX! But I got it installed it and it works flawlessly in my OLED steam deck. And def can't beat that price.

Very tempted to get a 64gb and swap a 1tb into it. My son will mostly use it

I just don't want to break it during the process lol

I jumped on a similar deal late last year. I have to say that it's been one of the best purchases I have ever made. Yes, it's the LCD version but I didn't have to fork out double the price for the OLED version and installing a new 1tb ssd wasn't as difficult as I thought. It also opened the world for me on emulators.
