$170 is 44.5% of this deal…not insignificant

It's a relative thing. If one is thinking that the screen can be better that takes away from the experience. But if one never even had a handheld, the experience is awesome. I'm still in awe at the LCD, so OLED will always be there as something to look forward to and available if I decide I want more. But I'm honestly happy with the LCD and haven't lost that feeling of satisfaction. One of the secrets of staying happy as a SD'er is being happy with less, as constantly desiring more ends following the law of diminishing return as far as our complacency.

Great deal! Affordable and great portable console. Wish soon will see the same price for Rog Ally Z1 Extreme.

Does anyone know if they are planning on adding the OLED version to the sale? I'm tempted to go for this one but would like to have the OLED screen and the battery upgrade.

wow, was going to get an Odin 2 Pro. Might get this instead. But, I really like the clear purple case that can be purchased with it. And its more portable.
Tough choice.

Definitely a snob. 70% isn't that bad and the color is decent. Real "budget" laptops comes with 45% sRGB and are absolutely horrendous. But imagine thinking you can get a $300 handheld device and complain about the screen being "only" 70% sRGB.
Dude, that is 45% NTSC, not 45% sRGB. Don't post nonsense here.

You don't need to buy an app for Xbox game streaming to work on the Steam Deck, these directions worked fine for me:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-...5be6d53296
You don't have to, but it works a LOT better for me. Very consistent experience and I believe you do need it to stream locally from your own XBox console.

I consider it $5 very well spent after trying multiple solutions and most of them didn't sign into MS well at all (I use the method you linked for iPhone and iPad without issue, but my Deck doesn't like it for some reason)

I impulse bought the SD a while ago when it was on sale, I haven't used it as much as I would like but it is a cool device. I like it way more than my Switch. I don't have any complaints about the screen, I'm sure OLED is better, but I've never noticed anything bad about it. My real complaint is how fiddly it is for certain things. Mine seems to run fine for anything natively Steam, but can get weird when I start trying other things. Like for whatever reason, trying to emulate GameCube games, the whole thing locks up and I have to do a hard reboot. Tried various troubleshooting and forums and following instructions, but hardly anybody else has the same issue. And no solutions when I last checked.

Also, for whatever reason, I can't get games to display above 720p when docked. It's nice for doing handheld, Steam stuff though.

I was going to upgrade an old computer of mine with a $200 graphics card, just so I can play certain 3d heavy/Unreal 4 engine platformers but nothing too resource intensive like Starfield. But with Steam deck going for $300 maybe I should just get one of these instead? How does it run being hooked up to a tv? I figure its just an hdmi.. does it run better docked? no difference?
Also, you don't need the "official" dock from Steam. Normally I do encourage official products because the cheap stuff dont do it right somehow, but I have both the official and 3rd party. I was afraid of overcharging the battery but that can be managed by the software running on the SD. A $30 3rd party dock from Amazon (or wherever) should be fine. I got the BaseUS for $30, I upgraded to $50 for a "better" one.. but honestly they are decent. At first I freaked out because I played minecraft and got like 25-30 fps, so choppy. But it turns out I was running nVidia race tracing that completely is NOT recommended. Once I ran regular Minecraft got the smooth 50-60 fps. It's adequate for most games. Don't need to plan for the latest ones if you live humbly on technology, the Steam Deck LCD is great.

I always trying to tell people that its a mind transformation. It's always gonna be the case something better comes along but if we ask for little and desire little, the LCD does more than enough for that technology update itch. Also, as long as you play a few hours it should be fine. I know its a handheld but I play in on the TV all the time and unplugged when its 80% charged. When it goes to 0%, it reminds me that I had enough playing for the day so its beneficial to help a person manage their time and life.

Ugh, the sale price convinced me to get one. Almost pulled the trigger then started watching videos of the OLED, and then a $300 purchase turned to $550. Valve got me.
That's a trick that will always happen. It's the power of temptation, and you can give in or not. I wouldn't regret the decision but just so you don't fall for it next time it will always happen. Been in the industry for 30+ years. The trick is to train your mind, not focus on the product, to deny temptation when it comes. And it does take practice, and if you fail at times don't worry about it. Just keep practicing. When you practice enough, follow a sequence of the right questions, you will eventually have little desire and be happy. You won't be a target for the next big thing. $550 for the OLED is still great value but I personally love the sub-$300 deal. And despite what some say, the OLED screen by itself is impressive but didn't really make me want it too much. I like the LCD and felt it was more than enough. I really don't see how its faded. Also, just to play devil's advocate, it's not like when we play the SD LCD we have the the other screen next to it to remind how faded it looks while we play. So I don't notice how lesser of a screen it is, I rather love the LCD screen. And in a few years I can imagine how the OLED will be be an option under the right price and will be dogged because something better than OLED will come (maybe QLED?) and then people will do the same thing and say how OLED is a thing of the past and old tech.

In summary, it's the training of the mind and takes practice. Don't regret your decision but be prepared next time. If you fail then, don't worry, and practice some more the next time following that. Eventually you will get it or anyone willing to try. It's practicing mindfully every time and also remember, its not a binary outcome (like I succeeded or failed) but a %. If you are 5% successful, maybe you can go for 10%. Keep practicing until its 80-100% and you can deny temptation when it hits you. And be happier. The glass is both half-empty and half-full, but it is the mind that chooses which truth to believe.

For those that have both or have used both -- Aside from the screen, is the extra battery life and 'better thermals' noticeable in the OLED model?

I'm up thanks. However, these things are bound to be cheaper getting close to BF. I just don't see value in straining my two assets called eyes on an LCD screen in year 2024 when I already know there are tons of competition out there now if you know the market.

there was a 3rd party app to improve the color temperature, but then valve just built it into the steam deck os. Give color temp options a shot, seems to make a noticeable difference.

there is no way an oled is a slick deal at 200-300 dollars more. I regularly use OLED and "other" in a few different devices, I'm never bothered by it. The lie is once you OLED you can't go back, because you absolutely can EEK!

The option with a better screen that is a value comparible to the steam deck LCD clearance deals are the asus rog ally and extreme, but it's usually on ebay/fb/craigs. The only deal I'm seeing online is best buy open box is in the 470-500 range for extreme. Only 400 and less is really tempting. and 300 for the non extreme rog ally. but there's a lot about the steam deck that is superior to the windows experience, and there's some support/flexibility for "putting up with windows." We're all making choices right now that will shape the future of handheld gaming for the next 100 years

No need to twist it. Oled wins hands down, but if you are not in a rush , just wait these lcd's are out of production now.

I dunno, I have the LCD and am upgrading to OLED, will see what I can get for the LCD, but lighter and better battery and larger screen sold me.

Thanks for this tip. 2TB sn740's are readily available at low prices.
