First, a quick note: Yesterday I ordered the Tapo C402 Kit (1080p bullet type battery cam bundled with the solar panel). The price is currently $50 on Amz but that dropped to $42.49 with discount code 15TPSOLARCAM on checkout. That's like buying the solar panel and getting a battery camera for $2.50! YMMV on the coupon code though.

Ok, on to my Tapo observations. This weekend I installed the C425 Solar Kit (Mag cam and solar panel) at my mother's house.

I also installed the basic C100 1080p indoor camera in her garage so she can make sure it's empty before she goes out there to do laundry. 1080p resolution is more than adequate for that. I didn't even bother installing a memory card in that one since she's really only using it for live view. Being elderly and living alone, it really gives her piece of mind and a sense of safety to be able to look out there before entering the garage.

Couple observations RE: the solar kit. The C425 Mag cam has a micro USB power jack. Since this is a somewhat newer product I would have expected USB-C. The older C100 camera has the ability to do 24/7 with a memory card installed. The newer, more expensive C425 Mag cam does not support 24/7 recording. "The battery would only last a few days then." you say. But even with the solar panel plugged in, or with the camera connected to the power supply it still cannot do 24/7 recording. That's a bit of a fail IMO. I'm the freakin' consumer. Let ME decide how often I'm willing to charge the battery and enable that feature which is standard on most of their wired cameras. Even the cheap little C100.

RE: The solar panel. The cable is hard wired into the back of the panel. Not ideal. Yes, I realize there's weatherproofing to consider, but there ARE options for weatherproof USB connectors out there. Also... they rave about the solar panel having a generous 4 meter cable. In reality, many installations will require a cable extension to place the solar panel in an ideal location while maintaining a tidy and secure wire install. Finding a micro USB extension cable wasn't impossible, but it did take a bit of searching through several offerings on Amz to find one that wasn't ridiculously long, or just a wee bit too short.

Still, compared to Wyze (or heaven forbid Ring) I believe Tapo delivers a better product experience, more intuitive app, friendlier installation and a more robust feeling product for about half the price, and without a subscription fee. Really, just about the only thing you don't get without a Tapo Care subscription is rich notifications and cloud storage. If you install a memory card in the camera (or hub for those cams that require one) you don't need the cloud storage. Rich notifications are nice, but the notifications you get are adequate. If you really feel like you're missing out, Tapo Care is three bucks a month.

I drank the Wyze Kool-Aid back in the very beginning with the Wyze Cam v1 and there were no subscriptions. Since then I've added some newer cameras, v2, pan, outdoor, etc. But as the company has grown the subscription prices have increased and the cloud response time has decreased horribly.

Basically what I'm after is saying I'm jumping ship from Wyze and dipping my toe in the TP-Link/Kasa/Tapo pool.

imho this is the best value, 2K video four pack for $62, but not waterproof so only through windows

https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Ta...B0BTTZQC79

if you are used to older security cameras that were more advanced, keep in mind Tapo cameras are so dumb they don't even have their own onboard webserver so they cannot do something as simple as showing you a single still image in the web browser

but a lot of people have been asking them for that so "maybe" someday

now we need a deal on a pack of high speed microsd cards

like this but actual quality and support video speeds

(don't buy these, just an example) https://www.amazon.com/Patriot-Mi...B08L4Y37PC

You are wrong. No issues viewing microsd recordings when not on wifi, I do not pay for any subscription fees.

I had to go the other direction. Couldn't add Tapo cameras into Kasa app, but could add all my Kasa smart lights into the Tapo app. So now I can use the Tapo app for all and don't need the Kasa app anymore

Pet detection available on these?

edit: listing says yes. the cheapest tapo cams I have are limited. I recently started switching over to Tapo. This seems like a great deal

I got these because you don't have to subscribe to a service, you can install a micoSD card and have it record on that and pull up footage from there. Of course it deletes the oldest videos if it needs more room for new footage.

Hi all, do these record on cloud? Is it free or with license?

I have 4 of the TAPO cameras included one of this. Works great. Even pan & tilt work. I stick a 4gb microsd, set it to continuous & use my BlueIris to detect motion. BI has a AI engine to detect person, pets,...

I put several in my old parents' house. It works very well. When they don't pick up the phone, I just turn on the speaker and talk to them directly. Highly recommend!

Bought the Tapo C120 recently to use as a baby monitor, the cry detection works pretty well and getting notifications without a subscription is great.

Ugh, saw the picture and thought these were Kasa. Same company, same exact hardware, won't work with each others apps. Stupid.

I have one of the indoor 2k camera. Actually 3 of them but only one deployed. I use it as my baby monitor. It also has a RTSP stream which is super convenient as I hook it up into scrypted so I can view the camera on all my other devices with TinyCam.

More the RTSP viewer appears to be limited to ONE concurrent viewer. If you try more than one before disconnecting it will deadlock the camera stream.

Other than they, fantastic camera.
so these work under TinyCam directly? I didn't see these specific model. You mentioned you used script, not sure what your set up is, but I'd like to just run it. as-is without scripts.

Any that has owned these and Eufy? How are the outdoor ones in comparison?

I'm tired of Eufy's motion detection.

I got the outdoor C120 about 2 months ago and I'm really impressed with it. I use Zoneminder and it works great with that. Great image quality and the app is surprisingly good. Like others have said, I have to use the Tapo app instead of Kasa now.

I also use it with Home Assistant to notify my iPhone when it detects a person or car. With HomeAssistant, I can set various filters and time frames.

Sometime soon I want to try to disable the internet access and make sure it still works since I record to my local network.

TP-Link more secure than Wyze? I have Wyze and I'd switched if there are.
