Why is top ramen more expensive then Maruchan? Is it better? I always saw them being pretty interchangeable/similar, but I am not picky and never really compared them side by side

Same price for beef, cheaper for chicken. The regular price is insane.

For some reason I always thought the noodles themselves were slightly higher quality than Maruchan, but it's probably just confirmatoin bias. Nissin is the original inventor of ramen, so that also probably gives them a bit of a boost to fame/price vs any other brand.

I get ramen from the Asian store and I eat most types drained, not as soup, and it's usually way too salty, so I'll get cheap ramen like this and just use the noodles to double the amount and then it's usually fine. Every so often I'm in the mood to just eat this, too, though I swear both brands don't taste nearly as good as they used to. Miss the discontinued flavors like Garden Vegetable and I feel like they ruined the chicken and beef by making them taste "more authentic", but removing some of the Asian spices (and possibly the MSG?) so they just taste like Lipton Cup'o'Soup and not ramen.

Ty for your opinion. Yeah, I usually do the same with Nongshim. Or I'll use that broth to season some vegetables after.

NGL, but I really like the cup of soup kind. But not because of the broth, I like the noodles more. I think it's because they make them thinner since they are supposed to cook in pour over hot water. Any microwaveable noodle soups seem to be that way too. If I could find those in cheap bricks I'd be in sodium induced heaven

If you're ever unsure of the power of MSG to flavor, have a sip of Nissin noodle broth and then Maruchan right after. At some point Nissin took MSG out of their recipe and it just isn't nearly as good as Maruchan as a result. It's the most effective way I know to show what MSG does to depth of flavor. Nissin noodles just taste like something is missing as a result.

I like the Nongshim noodles way better than Maruchan or Nissin, but those packs are expensive enough it's not cost-effective to buy it just to use the noodles as extras for something else. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of spicy ones. I actually don't like the Nissin Cup Noodles because the vegetables never cook. I got to the point where I toss the veggies because it's just green and orange and yellow rocks in my soup. I love the Nongshim microwavable ones in the round plastic bowls (not the taller paper ones for Red and Black) with the thin noodles. If I'm not in the mood for spicy, I'll use half of one of the leftover Nissin or Maruchan flavor packs in it. They do make a Savory Beef one that I haven't tried yet. I'm not entirely sure what to make of Hot and Spicy... does that mean it's double spicy? Confused

Mama makes decent boiling pour-over noodles but I swear they all taste the same no matter what flavor you get. Tokyo Noodle makes cute instant ones too but they taste the same as Mama. Try to get these in your local Asian store, because of 4 attempts at buying them on Amazon, only one ended up not shipped in a bubble envelope and squished into ramen dust. It is too salty to eat as a "snack", as suggested on the wrapper, it needs to be soup. They also make a spicy version. https://www.amazon.com/Tokyo-Rame...B00PWI0OLK

Nissin soy sauce and chili flavors are vegetarian but not vegan. Maruchan are not. They seem to be using the ingredients for one of the meat flavors for all the Amazon listings.

Keep in mind that Maruchan and Nissin themselves have different product lines and these are the cheapest/lowest-quality. For example, Maruchan Gold and Nissin Raoh lines are significantly more expensive and far higher quality for both noodle and soup. If you're not a fan of the spicy Nongshim noodles, but willing to pay for the higher price, I highly recommend checking out the higher-end lines from Maruchan and Nissin. Personally I have a preference for Maruchan Gold, but Raoh is pretty good too.

Ah, I meant that it's too expensive to use as spare noodles for the more expensive stuff, since I eat it drained and it's way too salty without doubling the volume of noodles (and too expensive to "just put half on"). Not a fan of the Raoh Soy and Miso flavors, but the Raoh Tonkotsu is one of my favorites. But I actually prefer the Nongshim and "cheap line" noodles over the Raoh noodles. I guess it's more "authentic" to restaurant ramen, but to me they feel more like Western spaghetti noodles than Asian noodles. I also really like Nissin Demae, which is the mid-grade line. So far I've tried the sesame (another favorite), tonkotsu (regular) and black garlic, which were all excellent. I have yet to see Maruchan Gold anywhere in my area, either at 3 Asian stores within driving distance or the Walmart that carries the Raoh (the one near me does not). I generally don't order online because I end up with it shipped in a bubble envelope and then ground back into flour.

Oh! Pardon my poor reading comprehension. So I just ordered a 5pk of Maruchan Gold from Amazon and they shipped it in those bubble envelope, but the product itself was packaged in a cardboard box by the manufacturer so the ramen arrived perfectly intact. That being said, the noodles are fairly similar to Raoh, so if you that's not your preference, you many not like these either. Unfortunately it's been really hard to find in the US recently, but the Myojo Chuka-zanmai ramen has really good, thin but firm/chewy and glossy noodles. If you ever find them, I would recommend those to try too.
