PSVR2 gets many of the top Quest games as well, and they can look drastically better at times (depending on the art style) + 4K OLED HDR. Mainly because mobile headset vs power of a console. But even when connecting a Quest to a PC, you have to deal with compression (be it USB or wireless).. that can effect image quality and consistency, colors.
PSVR2 does have exclusives you can't find anywhere. The best looking driving game in GT7 (with the console experience of not having to mess with PC settings and mods).. Official Resident Evil VR games that are the best looking Resident Evil 4 and 8.. and probably future ones. The best looking/running version of No Man's Sky (Space and Planet exploration)... and more (like Synapse) you can view videos of on Youtube..
Again the console experience of High End VR. I also own a PC/VR...and I love it for other types of experiences in VR... but for gaming, I play my PS5/PSVR2 more just for the less hassle experience/consistency.
$550 was already a great deal for all the tech inside the headset, in comparison to other PCVR wired headsets (Eye-Tracking Foveated Rendering, 4K OLED HDR display, 110° FOV, Advanced Haptics similar to the PS5 controller)... so $350 is a steal. Even for PC (if someone bought the $60 PC Adapter). Even without PS5 Exclusive features not being officially supported at launch for PC. It's still a 4K OLED VR Headset at $350. The next closest PCVR Headset like that is $1000 (Big Screen VR).
Don't get me wrong though, if someone has a large play area, wants an experience of moving where ever they want to, and interested in games like that..and don't care about graphics or extended playtime (battery).. the Quest 3 is a great/best option. Pick up and play VR anywhere.
I bought one at launch and also own a quest 3.. and it's hard to justify the PSVR2 at this point. At $350 it's a lot better than $550, but it kind of feels like an admission of defeat to drop a console by 33% overnight like this.
On the hardware front, it's using older fresnel lenses and black and white passthrough, it's tethered to a PS5, it requires a PS5!, it doesn't have 3D movie playback, it needs an addon cable and needs to be tethered to a PC for PCVR playback. It's incompatible with PSVR1 titles and many of the hardware features will not work in PCVR mode after you buy the cable.
I agree, some of the games I've played on it have been some of the best VR games I've ever played! Resident evil 4, 8 and Gran Turismo are amazing.. but there isn't much else. Most of the games are ports of quest games, with a small handful of exclusives.
Most of the multiplatform games run similarly on the quest 3 (especially with quest games optimizer), but the quest versions can be significantly cheaper at times (with a refund option, referral discounts and referral credits). Quest will run wirelessly, play PCVR wirelessly, play 3D movies, play side loaded apps, has pancake lenses, has color passthrough.. but more importantly: seems to have a brighter future.
Name 1 upcoming exclusive PSVR game you're looking forward to? And I say this as someone who owned one from day 1. Sell one to someone who either owns or doesn't own a quest, with the current library? Without resident evil and Gran turismo, there isn't much else.
I want it to succeed, I dropped about $800 after accessories on mine, but I haven't touched it in months and don't see any upcoming games
For PC only user...this also places a PlayStation product into a PC household. If it's a PC user who prefers uncompressed image quality from their VR Headset.. regardless of wired. So if a PC user (be it one who owns an older VR Headset) wanted a new VR headset.. they have the option of a 4K OLED headset from a trusted hardware manufacturer for $350 + $60 (adapter) $410... until the sale is over.
With a PlayStation VR product in their household....there is a chance that PC user might be tempted to get a PS5 (or PS5 Pro) if they ever find it on sale... be it for regular PS5 gaming + 4K BluRay Player... and of course to continue to take advantage of their PSVR2 on the PS5.
I feel there are more benefits long term.
In reality, with their games coming to PC there's very little incentive to get into the PS5 ecosystem if you are on a decent PC already, let alone into their VR offering.

But with this price drop + Dell AMEX offers/benefits, I can potentially get this real cheap if they price match. So if there was ever a time to try it out it'd be now
The great experience of GT7 in VR made the purchase worth it for me. A one of a kind experience.
However, what hasnt been mentioned is how cool the Cinematic mode is. You can enlarge your screen viewing area to 120". Its huge. Playing NHL is an awesome experience. You feel like you are on the ice. I can watch my Vudu/Fandango shows and they look great. I bought another one at $350 for the extra controllers, since they are hard to come by. Comfort was an issue at times on lower forehead but i bought the comfort kit with top headband and its great. Play for hours now. I havent done the games where you jump around, due to knee issues and surgery. But VR Kayak is great. I can row sitting down. No Mans Sky is mindblowing in cockpit flying through space utilizing the VR controllers. So cool. Star Wars VR is great shooting but gets a little samey after awhile. Horizon VR is very immersive, but gets repetitive. WalkAbout MiniGolf is great. UltraWings is very cool too. I have so many more VR games to experience but it checks a lot of boxes for me.
TIA!

Yes you won't deal with artifacts or compression when you are just playing mobile games designed for the Quest. But you have to deal with the mobile type graphics, if someone cares about that. Like say someone being ok playing a multiplatform game on the Mobile Nintendo Switch, over a PS5. Those VR games look much better on the PSVR2/PS5. But true Meta is investing alot in their headset, including exclusive games. Imo, just like huge catalog of games on Gamepass and PS+, at the end of the day I can't play hundreds of games... I don't need to have every game or exclusive (although a game like GT7 or Flight Sim sticks out to me.. enough to buy a headset). So even if someone is missing out on a mobile type of Quest game, imo it's not that big of a deal in comparison to getting the best looking versions of PCVR ports, Quest Ports, and eventually more PSVR2 exclusives.
Again, if someone cares about being wireless and don't care about graphics or long game sessions.. Quest Headset is the better choice.
As far as 3D playback, it might still be coming to the PS5... 3D playback on the PS4/PSVR1 released some time after the headset released. It was patched in post launch. But either way, now that the PSVR2 supports PC... users can have WAY MORE media options. Every PCVR media option.. like say Big Screen theater on Steam.
As far as you not touching your PSVR2 for months, when you would have the best looking version of the Quest games you've been playing (I mean like seriously, try Red Matter 1/2 and Walking Dead on the PSVR2... they look Amazing..hell Star Wars looks WAAAAAAY better)....I don't know what to tell you. You should have sold your PSVR2 before the prices dropped maybe?
And there are more games than just GT7 and RE... like No Man's Sky... f'n in Space... flying through orbit and landing on planets! CyubeVR. There are, and will be more PCVR games coming to the PS5. Like Aces Of Thunder (War Thunder, WW1 dogfighting).
As far as lenses, yes THAT is where Meta choose to invest in their headset. But there are downsides to that... just like there are downsides to choosing frenzel lenses. If someone wanted to play a game like Elite Dangerous, that has alot of black because.. space lol... they are going to want to play on an OLED, instead of LCD (where it will look grey)... Sweetspot is more of a convenience thing. It can be improved on if it bothers someone, by getting the $50 Globular Cluster add on for more comfort to keep a sweet spot. Just like how a Quest 3 user would buy the battery strap to add balance to their headset for comfort. A LCD display can't be improved on... it's there for good.
And as far as a brighter future... as we have seen, Meta will continue to keep releasing newer versions of their headset every few years... so yeah brighter future if someone is willing to upgrade.. because to be honest, there are going to be more games releasing that will not be compatible with the Quest 2 headset, just like their huge upcoming Batman game that is only compatible with the Quest 3. So lets say in a few years when the Quest 4 releases... there is a good chance it will get exclusive games that take advantage of that hardware, but those games might not be compatible with the Quest 3. Sure the majority of casual games will be compatible. But heavy hitters that need a powerful chip to show what the headset could do, might abandon the Quest 3. Just like the Batman game is abandoning the Quest 2. With the PSVR2, just like the PSVR1, you know it is going to be supported for the rest of the generation. And with the PSVR2 being future proof with eye-tracking, 4K, HDR, and MOST IMPORTANTLY Inside Out tracking (instead of the weird PS Move + Seperate camera set up of the PSVR1).. it should be alot easier to support backward compatibility come PS6... Because the PSVR3 will most likely be inside-out tracking as well.
In reality, with their games coming to PC there's very little incentive to get into the PS5 ecosystem if you are on a decent PC already, let alone into their VR offering.
With a Quest Headset, you are not getting an uncompressed image from the PC... be it connected by USB or Wireless... then there can be tech issues as well, if someone is not tech savy.
Also you can go do some research, but a "decent PC" is not going to put up a good fight with a PS5 and Eye-Tracking Foveated Rendering. You're going to need a powerful PC, for high end VR gaming. And sometimes even that isn't enough to get the same experience as the same game on the PS5/PSVR2... like say No Man's Sky. Look it up.

So now instead of 1080p, the PSVR2 is 4K and supports HDR.. has the same haptic features in the controllers as the Dualsense Controller. And thanks to the PS5's quick SSD... loading for PSVR2 games are quick as heck, if not nonexistent.
You only have one long cord that connects directly to the PS5... instead of all those wires you had to deal with on the PSVR1.
Watch some GT7 VR videos on Youtube... not just races but also showcases where you can stand around the car...and be in it as well... looking at everything. This is what is cool about GT7.. all these years they have invested in creating the best looking car models and interiors for TV gaming... all those years have paid off, because now they can turly appreciated in VR. And although GT7 might not be your kind of racing. Once in VR, and especially with a wheel... oh boy you will be having fun. It's like driving in real life. You will actually be better in the game, because you'll see more of the track and hit the turns better (apex)... just fun as heck driving around in so many different cars I'll never afford or even find (old muscle cars).
But yeah totally worth it, especially at $350.
