You can activate phone #1 to have the bundled 1-yr and units loaded to it. Then activate phone #2 WITH A TRANSFER from phone #1; service on phone #1 (phone number, 1-yr, units) get transferred to phone #2, then the bundled 1-yr and units for phone #2 get added on top, giving phone #2 two years of service and 2x the units.

If you're currently using a phone on TF, your can activate phone #1 WITH A TRANFER from your current phone to have your current phone number, days, units transferred to phone #1, then the bundled 1-yr and units for phone #1 get added on top. Then activate phone #2 with a transfer from phone #1. After that, if you prefer to use your current phone, re-activate your current phone with a transfer from phone #2. Smart existing TF users do that all the time to "harvest" cheap service days and units from those HSN/QVC bundles.

Folks, just so you're aware...

The service plan is 1500 text, 1500 minutes, 1.5gb data -- for the *entire year*. Not per month. That's about 4 minutes of talk time per day.

It's an extremely minimal and restrictive cellular plan, one that you could even call insultingly low - especially if you're used to cellular plans in modernized nations (aka, ones outside the the USA). It's not for everyone, and make sure it fits your use case.

No need to be insulted - for many people (for example, those who use less than 4 minutes of phone talk per day) paying $2 (and sometimes less) per month for a phone service which includes a new smartphone every year is a very good deal.

I doubt that Motorola would allow provider branded phones to be rooted.

Does anyone know - can I whitelist "allow cellular data" by app? Or can this phone be rooted to do so?

The reason I ask - I'd like to buy this for my son, but he would unknowingly burn through the data in a day if I let him. So I'd like to turn the data off for only the apps that need it like messaging - but allow wifi access for all apps.

Any phone can be used as wifi device, just turn off cell connection so you don't get activation reminders.
Phones will never unlock if you don't activate - and since phones come with service you might as well use it. There are plenty of choices available for less if you just want a wifi device.
Thats not entirely true some of the prepaid phones wont let you use the phone at all without activating. They actually list this on the top of the box saying, "WiFi is not avilable on the device until activated on the XXX network". I found this out by watching a youtube video created 2 weeks ago by jOhnZoid called Family Dollar Smartphones: Lets Explore!. The first phone tested (Moto G 5G from Verizon) did this and it doesnt look like their is a way to get around it from the video.

Yes you can, i use the app NetGuard. It work by running like a VPN and you set each apps access to wifi only, cellular only or both. I used it to block youtube music from mobile data.

None of the phones I've purchased from HSN/QVC or direct from Tracfone/Total/Straight Talk (& it's been a lot over the years) have had any problems.
I always test my phones on Wi-Fi before activating, I wouldn't buy it if I couldn't.

Option 1: Transfer service/number from Pixel 7 -> Moto G Play #1 -> Moto G Play #2 -> Pixel 7. Potential issue is that TF may not let you reuse the BYOD SIM, so you may need a new BYOD SIM when transferring everything back to Pixel 7 (plus 2 years of service and 3,000 TTD).

Option 2: Log in to your account, activate Moto G Play #1, wait a day or two (more days if you care about unlock the new phone) then transfer service/number to Moto G Play #2. Wait a few days then chat with TF to combine/add the service on Moto G Play #2 to Pixel 7 (both lines need to be in the same account). DM me if you need help to chat with TF. I have a script that I use for service transfer/combine with great success.
For option #1, what's the process for transferring the moto #2 into the pixel? Do you go to activate and enter the newly purchased SIM card number and select keep my number?

I think it's similar to the DIY [reddit.com] process, but you select 'Keep You Own Phone' and enter IMEI and SIM ICCID. However, I have not done DIY transfer of BYOD. Hope someone here can share experience and confirm.

I have activated a lot of TF-branded phones, and as oregon14 stated, you can absolutely use their phones on Wi-Fi without activating. Occasionally I see posts asking if they should setup the phone or activate it first. It makes no difference with TF-branded devices. If you activate the phone first on the TF website before setup, your phone has a # and is ready to use once you turn it on and setup. I like to setup the phone first to make sure it works, before activating or transferring service to it. (The phone will continue to work on Wi-Fi without cellular until you take action to activate it.)

Been waiting for a good deal! Bought it with a new email address and used Hello30 for $30 off as a new customer so it was less than $50 for me.
Good to know to use a different email address. How bout credit card, same or different?

I have read through the thread but hoping someone can clarify. I need 1 phone for my son. If I buy the 2 phones and I activate one with magic jack ph # we have. Should I wait less than 30, 30-60, or 60+ days to move to phone 2 to combine? Once moved to phone 2 will that extend to 2yrs and 3000 total? Is it per year or 3000 total? Meaning if he uses 2500 in 1year will he be over? Lastly once I move from phone 1 to 2, if he breaks or loses phone 2, can I put it all back on phone 1? Does the waiting period come into play for that scenario? Don't care about resale or phone being unlocked other than for me as a back up. TIA

Someone else will likely reply but I believe you activate the first and transfer the number, wait for it to complete then activate the second and transfer the first to it. I don't have the exact steps though. Then after 60 days the first phone will be unlocked. Good to keep it as a spare in the other gets broken.

Last year I used the website to transfer service from an unlocked non-TF phone with a BYOP SIM to an Orbic Journey, then transferred back to the original non-TF phone and I didn't need a new BYOP SIM.
