Honestly , I don't think this is just a kids tablet. It is good for more than 90% of tablet users.

We bought two of these for my kids from target a few months back while they were $250 after years of shitty fire tablets. Worth every penny. Kids can actually play the games without crazy lab and crashing. Fantastic kids tablet.

I'm in the market for 256GB or better model for my kids.

The OS and system files take up almost 20GB of space. Photos, messages, and a couple of apps take up the rest. My daughter plays Minecraft and downloads stuff… her installation is up to 15GB alone just for Minecraft. Son uses Procreate and Procreate Dreams, together take about 8GB for the apps alone, not counting their creations.

If they're just watching YouTube or whatever on it then I'd say it's fine, but beware if your kids want to expand the use beyond that. You'll also always need around 10GB free for OS updates.

Personally I'm never getting a 64GB model again. It used to be fine, but the bloat is real.
Perhaps you need to take the tech from your kids and alow them to grow up playing outside?

My kids are playing Roblox and some other small games. 64Gb is plenty for them. YMMV with storage requirements.
Came here to say that. My daughter's first iPad is a 32gb 7th gen and it's just now starting to not hold a charge longer than a couple hours so I'm looking to replace it. She uses it mostly for YouTube, Roblox and Minecraft so she's never needed more than 32gb. Nice thing about iPads is the huge cheap selection of childproof cases. 7th gen still sells for over $100 locally so this upgrade will only be about !$150 with taxes, not a bad upgrade every 5 years.

Target probably better with the 5% discount.

People who make the cloud storage argument are people who don't use cloud storage. All cloud storage solutions suck compared to having enough internal storage. They are NOT instantaneous. Far from it. They are all glitchy. High quality storage is dirt cheap in 2024. You can get a very good 1TB SSDs for below $100. It is sad that Apple (and Microsoft, following Apple's example) grapes their customers when it comes to storage, charging nearly 10x as much for storage as it really costs.

Lol somehow people are thumbing you down. It is already proven giving kids screen is bad for them, and it's undeniably better for them to do things outside and outside of screens

Good iPad, only concern for long term is that 9th gen has 3GB RAM, 10th gen has 4GB and M1 Air 8GB. Likely at some point some software will require more than 3GB RAM. But for next few years this should be plenty.

Our iPads have lasted physically 6-7years usable so need to think bit longer term
My 9.7" iPad Pro from 2016 is still working fine, though I only use it for media consumption. I never bought a new one because I hated how the "stereo" speakers on the non-pro models were only stereo when it's held vertically. Want stereo when watching a movie in landscape like a sane person? Gonna have to shell out a lot more money, son.

The $400 iPad Air M1 at Walmart is the value sweet spot for iPads at the moment IMO.

This has 3GB RAM, while the air has 8 same as the Pro. A far more capable piece of tech with a far longer lifespan of relevance.

Applecare on a $200 device? Can't do a warranty claim for insufficient RAM, unfortunately.

I got the ipad 9th gen a few months ago for 249 dollars, good to see the price is dropping. 64gb storage is plenty for me since I mostly surf the web, and watch media from my plex server on this device, I have 40 gig free on my device. Can this device play movies, tv shows, listen to music, podcasts, audiobooks, surf the web, email, video chat, ... and other basic stuff... if it can ... great. This device can do all that no problems.

Others need fancier tech because they do PRO artist stuff, or WORK stuff, or VIDEO stuff, or other PRO level stuff ... I don't do any of that on my home devices.

In for one. Replacing a 5th gen for someone who just uses it to watch cat videos pretty much.
