Let be clear on their unlocking policy. There is 365 days waiting time, and also the phone should have service for 180 days within 365 days. This is per my recent conversation with their customer service agent.
Please remember that their unlock policy criteria does not specify automatic unlock regardless of the service time.

You're missing the point here. 99% of us only want to pay $125 1x to get the phone. You want to pay $70 a month for 2 years. Not us😀

Try inserting a different sim card to see if it works. It takes a while to update otherwise. Or you can check the imei on sickw.com
sickw seemed useless. Took 2x as long to give me no results first time I tried, and 2nd took just as long to tell me the Daily Limit was exceeded. (mine? it's??).
IMEI check did work on imeicheck.com and does correctly ID my phone and says it's unlocked. Guess all I need then is a SIM. Thanks.

The first iPhone 12 I activated (per an old email) on 10/22 but my iPhone 12 says that the warranty is through 10/20/2025, so I'm guessing it was somewhere between those days. I turned my phone on, still says locked. Tried restarting a couple of times, still says locked.

I tried an Ultra Mobile pSIM that I have, which gives me an error. Tried restarting a couple of times, still getting an error about the SIM's compatibility. Removed the SIM, restarted a couple of times, still locked.

I have two more iPhone 12s, but not quite at the six-month mark for them to test.

Any advice? Do I need to leave the phone powered on and connected to wifi for any significant time to unlock?

Looks like some people just put their phones in a drawer and it unlocked without any significant extra effort from them except maybe a restart.

Did you ever get it to unlock? Going through this process now.

Yes. LIke I mentioned, it was ID'd from the IMEI online as already unlocked. I just needed to restart with a new SIM that was active and it refreshed and showed it was unlocked. Not sure if an inactive SIM will also work.

I did try with an Ultra Mobile pSIM card (currently active). Then restarted after removing the SIM card. Mine was still locked (Settings --> General --> About).

I didn't try looking online at IMEI check. But wouldn't the phone settings itself still need to update itself to be unlocked (regardless of what web sites say) in order to be able to use the phone with other plans?

Phone get updated by Apple, I believe, based on info received from the carrier. That's why my IMEI check includes info like when it was activated and when the warranty ends. The online info can know it's status is unlocked even if the phone itself doesn't if it hasn't been updated. So if the IMEI info online says it's still locked (per Apple), no point at all in playing with SIMs and restarting. Just google IMEI check, if you don't want to use the one I mentioned above.
As to why, maybe it only forces a manual check and status update when trying to use a new SIM...? Not sure myself, only that it worked. And try restarting WHILE the SIM is installed. Not sure why you wanted to remove the new SIM before restarting.

What I meant was that I tried restarting WITH the SIM in the phone a couple of times, and when that didn't work, I removed the SIM and restarted in case I was missing something, and that didn't work as well.

PSA: If your iPhone isn't showing "No SIM Restrictions" and you're unsure if it's unlocked, try inserting a SIM card from a different carrier.
I purchased my phones in August/September 2024, and they didn't show as unlocked until I tested them with another provider's SIM. It might be the same for you—worth a quick check!

Can this be a T-Mobile-owned SIM card like Ultra Mobile/Mint? Or does it have to be from a carrier that is on a different network (meaning, AT&T, Verizon, or maybe Boost)?

I am not 100% sure, but I believe it just has to be a non-MetroPCS SIM.

Thanks for sharing, I will try it today. One year happened on 9/21 and I still see sim locked status. I was thinking to reset to trigger the unlock process but your sim suggestion makes lot of sense.
