One of the longest running stores giving how VUDU has gotten bought out multiple times now. Additionally they upgrade from HD to 4k for free when available.

I ONLY buy Apple now.

On September 12, 2023, I was lucky enough to see the notification for Burn Notice: The Complete Series for $19.99 on Apple TV.

I'd buy if it meant you owned. But since this is really a longish term digital rental, it's not worth it. Watch on streaming sites and save the money!
Brother, it is not a long-term rental. It is owning something. The moment they start taking away peoples digital movies and TV shows it's all over their multi billion dollar digital movie service is done.

And VUDU is still around after being bought out all those times that tells you how reliable and profitable that service is. Not to mention, VUDU hands down has the best interface and ability to navigate seasons and episodes.

Then I guess Microsoft is done.

Exactly this, I don't buy digital anymore after realizing this is completely true, you will never own this. Physical you own, digital can be made not to work at anytime.

I prefer to buy my movies on Apple and my TV shows on Vudu, but if the deals good enough I'll flip that.

There was also the big bruhaha about Sony losing the rights to Mythbusters, so anyone who "bought" it via the PS Store wouldn't be able to watch it anymore. Think ultimately they came to some new arrangement, but probably just a matter of time before they try to yank it again.

Digital anything.... you own nothing. Games, movies, TV shows, doesn't matter, you're paying for perpetual* access. not any kind of ownership. Look at all the Nintendo DSi and Wii games that now only exist on specific consoles, and only until a capacitor or something gives out and the unit dies. Apple may be riding high now, but it was within living memory for a lot of people that they were literally days away from insolvency and would have gone out of business if not for an investment from Microsoft. They've been slowly transitioning to becoming a fintech firm of late, so don't be surprised if in a couple years they announce they're spinning/selling off iTunes and AppleTV+. Only the shadow knows what the new owner might then do.

* Until such time that the rights holder decides they don't want to let you access it anymore

They were bought out twice in 20 years. They were founded in 2004. Walmart bought them in 2010, and Fandango bought them in 2020. That's really not that many times.

Also, Apple doesn't have any TV shows in 4K, even ones that are available in 4k elsewhere like Vudu.
