My kids have been using the $6 PSPlay app to stream to their tablets, and they just connect a controller to the tablet with a cord to avoid any pairing/re-pairing issues. Does the PS Portal actually offer any benefits over my setup?

Looks cooler. Also, contrary to what some are putting here, it works fine outside the house. All depends on the internet. Make sure you have a good ethernet cord attached to your PS5 at home. Thisnis where most people go wrong. Also, if the internet sucks where you are connecting, can affect the experience. The update worked great to get into secured internet spots that need a password.

Is it a necessity? No. Is it a nice to have? I think so. Just nice to sit in bed and play something without needing a separate control from the screen and have it all in one to just pick up and play.

As far as lag/latency it all comes down to your wifi (as any device would). Works perfect at home I get virtually no lag or latency issues that are noticeable.

I have used it at some hotels with success and others not so much but again that's the case with any device and the wifi.

Not everyone can run cables to every room in the house or wants to. I have top of the line WiFi 6E mesh and gigabyte Ethernet, was hoping the tech would have improved, but nope

$6? Isn't the app supposed to be free?
The official Sony app is limited to what devices it supports.

This alt App is considered superior compared to the official offering, and it's compatability isn't limited. I use it for my G Cloud

It's just a cable from router to PS5, not to every room in the house

So if you're renting and your router is in one room and the PS5 is in the bedroom, are you just going to run 150 foot Ethernet cable along the floor from one room to another?

Can this be used as a second ps5 controller as well? Weird use case, I know, but it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone
It can but in an unusual way. It doesn't have direct Bluetooth connection to the PS5. You are basically logging into PS5 remotely to play, so you will get a second display on the Portal which you can't turn off. My kids have played local coop with it. Works fine for games like Sack Boy. There may be some slight lag so probably not the best option. It also takes much longer to connect to the PS5 compared to your normal controller.

Have u tried streaming from PS5 to PC? You can just bring your laptop in that case.
Hm, I didn't know it can be done. I have a gaming rig in another room that I can try streaming to.

So you've got to have a PS5 to use this? It can't game by itself? Lame
If you want portable Sony gaming then look to the Sony PSP or the Sony PlayStation Vita. Both of these systems are excellent and honestly they were both ahead of their time . Much more advanced and enjoyable to use compared to anything Nintendo had at that time , And some would even argue even now.

Try Chiaki-ng if you want to stream. You don't even have to install it.

Yes it does. There's a controller for usbc that just released called abxylute s9 that's supposed to have vibration if you want one with the 16 pro max

By the way phone screens are not biggee, due to aspect ratio handhelds like Portal or G Cloud will always feel bigger
Thanks for the heads up. Like my backbone but wish I had vibration

I tried using streaming PS5 with Jawbone, and it didn't go well. Phone screen is too small to capture details. When traveling, I just take the switch with me - may just try taking the PS5 along as I bought a carry bag for it.
Tablets work better for this, some newer controllers fit ipad minis now

Ok. Thank you for answering. I feel like they could have easily just added a Bluetooth connection to have a p2 on screen for playing couch coops, a la Wii U. Seems like a bit of a missed opportunity. I appreciate the response.
