This is a weird one, because this is more of a remaster than a remake. It's very admirable because in this day and age of devs remaking and ruining games for the "modern audience", the devs here recreated the original perfectly.
The problem is they recreated it perfectly. There are almost ZERO quality of life improvements, it's still as convoluted as ever trying to figure out what you're meant to do next unless you know this game like the back of your hand. Combat, which was visceral and hardcore in the 90s, now feels so dated and "haha games sucked back back".
So if you go into this knowing you're going to have a perfect recreation of 90s gameplay and appreciate that, this is at least an 8/10 game. If you have any expectations of this being as smooth as a Halo, you're going to have a VERY bad time.

Check out reviews. VERY old school but fun going in with right mindset. Inventory management is a bare.

Neat flashback, great retro/modern graphics, but a super tough game in terms of knowing what to do and where to go, and YouTube walkthroughs aren't helpful since the maps are so maze-like. I found myself desperately missing the guide arrow from BioShock (the spiritual successor of System Shock).

I absolutely loved this game on PC. The levels are maze-like but I really enjoyed figuring out every nook and cranny. The only thing that really sucked was the cyberspace combat, which almost ruined the game for me until I found a PC mod that made it much easier. For me, I would have rage-quit an otherwise incredible game if there wasn't a cyberspace mod available. I really liked the combat and how the weapons felt.

I am pretty sure you played the original and not the remastered version which is what is on sale.

100%. I never played the original but I thought this remake was a masterpiece other than the cyberspace. I think in a few instances it's actually not needed. But this might have been my favorite game this year.

IGN reviewer had a different perspective - I.e combat, AI, weapons, all completely revamped. But that the developers didn't want it to just become a "modern game" but to retain everything about the original that made it so great 30-years ago. So no quest log, and a game that is primarily about exploring a labyrinth (rather than for example having waypoints fed to you). Pretty thoughtful review here: https://www.ign.com/articles/syst...ake-review

Sounds like it's definitely not for everyone, but might be really delightful for the right person.

Played this on PC last year. Loved it. Still holds up for fans of Immersive Sims, and the game has a ton of style.
