Note that the previous thread on this has a massive amount of technical discussion about practically every aspect of this router and detailed setup instructions etc. If looking for answers, I'd start with a search in that thread (terms like OpenWRT, DD-WRT, stock, CA, mesh, USB, throughput, wired, backhaul, bricked, etc). That may be a good start for those new to it, as it probably already answers a lot of questions that are sure to crop up.

Also, here's a link to some of the basic support docs for it from the Linksys site …

2nd truckload just arrived! Thanks op for posting
Bricked one to OpenWRT... time to stock up more for science.

How is it too complicated? Lol
Probably installed the version that didn't include the luci gui and doesn't know ssh command to install it.

Apparently there are some more hardcore openwrt-ers who believe luci is unnecessary bloat for babies and dummies and only use ssh command lines to adjust and configure all settings.

From what I understand, these have two partitions and can have two different firmwares loaded and boot to either one you choose (kind of like a dual-boot computer setup). What you might want to consider is just switching to boot the other partition with stock firmware (assuming you didn't flash both partitions). That would allow you to go back and play with OpenWRT again later if you choose.

I believe that the procedure to switch between using the first / second partitions is to power-cycle the device three times with about a 5-second delay between them. My understanding is that this is kind of a fail-safe in case one partition becomes corrupted, then it automatically switches to using the other partition if it fails to boot up three times in a row. So the triple power-cycle (allowing it to start the boot process for 5 seconds but not finish loading) three times essentially sends the signal to use the other partition (and would be unlikely to be accidentally triggered that way under most circumstances). However, I believe that someone also mentioned it might take 4 or 5 power-cycles instead of 3 (possibly just an issue of getting the timing for the on/off cycle right).

I haven't started playing with them yet, so I'm not positive of all this, but that has been my understanding based on some of the posts from the previous thread. Some of the users more experienced with it can chime in if I've misinterpreted some of this.

Also, I think someone in the previous thread stated that holding the reset button for 30 seconds might automatically flash it back to stock firmware (although I don't recall seeing that discussed much and I don't know if that's accurate or if using the reset button might just be a way to reset your setting / configuration changes). Normally, I would suspect that a reset would just reset the config and not firmware, but not sure here.
What effect does the 3x power cycle have on stock firmware? Is it just switching between 2 identical firmwares? I wonder if you can have different settings for each partition's stock firmware.

Does this do wired back haul?
I never even tried the stock firmware, but yes I have wired backhaul working flawlessly on my LN1301s using OpenWRT.

Great thread! Thanks everybody. The HUGH wiki post with directions on how to set up and tips and pointers is fantistic! That is how the WIKI post should look, many people that set it up, let us know what worked and didn't work , and shared their experience.

This wiki is way too long IMO with random comments. Needs to just have instructions and pros/cons of different firmwares summarized

It's too bulky for that purpose. BTW, the stock firmware is almost trash. I recommend GL.iNet for travel router.
I have a GL.iNet travel router. I'm thinking to use this as home VPN server so that I can access my home network when I'm traveling. Does the stock firmware support running a VPN server or I'll need to install OpenWRT?

You'll need to install OpenWRT or DD-WRT

Stock, the second partition is unused. I don't know what would happen if you tried the 3x power cycle, whether it would automatically switch back to the original partition or if you would need to do the 3x power cycle again.

Can you go over "then hardwire the other linksys child node to your master node"?

I have the master node bridged and connected to my modem/router.

But how do I get back into the master node after bridging? Right now I'm using the default wifi on the parent node to wirelessly connect and trying to CA but the child node is not responding
When I say "then hardwire the other linksys child node to your master node" I literally mean connect an ethernet cable from the child node's wan (or LAN?) port to one of the master node's lan ports.

so for example in my home i have the following layout --

Verizon Modem/Router connected. Wifi radios disabled.

Linksys Master Node connected to Verizon Modem/Router in bridge mode and via ethernet cable -- to the LAN port I believe. Linksys Master Node serving a single SSID throughout floor one of my house.

Linksys Child Node 1 located on second floor of house. Ethernet traveling from LAN (might be WAN, i am working from memory) port of Linksys Child Node 1 through wall and down to first floor of house, into LAN port of Linksys Master Node. Linksys Child Node 1 serving same SSID throughout floor two of my house.

Linksys Child Node 2 located on third floor of house. Ethernet traveling from WAN (again, might be LAN) port of Linksys Child Node 2 through wall and down to first floor of house, into another LAN port of Linksys Master Node. Linksys Child Node 2 serving same SSID throughout floor three of my house.

I then also have a third child node to serve one particular distant room. This one is not hardwired back to the master node. This one is actually connected by wireless backhaul to the child node on my second floor.

Thanks for the reply. Can you explain this "Running one Parent and two wireless nodes in stock FW mesh." a bit more?

I am planning to use the TMobile home internet + 1 or 2 of these Linksys routers. Is that what you mean by one Parent and wireless node?

He means he bought 3 of these Linksys and have them setup in a mesh with the 2 child nodes connected wirelessly. The Linksys parent node is connected to the T-Mobile gateway/router.

Are there step by step instructions how to do this anywhere? I'm not very tech savvy..
Use stock firmware, it works fine even with all the "wrong" settings will be same or faster than what you likely have now. Then can add second "child node" (2nd one of these) to have better WiFi in dead spots.

Once this 2nd one setup you can move around to see where close enough to main "parent node", but closer to where you had a WiFi dead spot.

Unlike old wifi repeater from decade ago this has 3 radios so it doesn't need to cut WiFi speed in half to share connection back to main router.

At these prices no brainier yet 2

Are you certain of this? I haven't tested, but others have stated that if you brick OpenWRT installed on first partition you can recover to stock FW on second partition?

Thanks...got 3 of th3se from the last deal and working in mesh mode wonderfully. Speeds are better than eero pro 6 (4200) with less lag with 60+ smart devices...no crashes etc.

Wish there was a stable build of ddwrt to run VPN on these...
I am considering this since I have the same Eero 6 Pro (3x hardwire mesh setup). I assume you converted these to DDWRT, how is the interface and are there options to group devices (into profiles) and ability to pause and resume (including remotely)? I have small kids and use Eero's controls with scheduling restrictions and blocking categories. Thanks in advance.
