Does anyone know how this compares to the expand-it edger attachment [ryobitools.com]? I already have the attachment, but don't know if it's worth the $125 to upgrade.

I know. I have it at the lowest depth and it just isn't usable for me. I've found myself to use my other edgers instead which don't have this problem.
Might be able to hack a smaller wheel in the back.

Unlike many other in this thread I actually want the trimmer since I already have a 6Ah battery from a mower. I see on FB marketplace sketchy "open box" 4Ah ones are selling for $70 so hopefully I can get $80 for a brand new one.

I used the attachment, then got this edger. It's like night and day. I strongly recommend this edger.

I found myself with this problem, then had the idea to try a replacement 9" blade. Turns out that my original blade had worn down over time. The new blade now goes a deep as I need.

Obviously other than no cord, how does this stack up again the Black & Decker "edge hog"? That's what Im currently rolling with.

You can call it a hack but it is what it is. Basically keeping something you didn't pay for. Do you work for Home Depot so you know what they know and don't know? I'm gonna take a good guess and say you don't have any involvement in HD corporate knowledge.
It's not keeping something you didn't pay for at all. It's not a scam and HD knows all about it and has been doing the sales this way for at least 10 years. They discount the two items in the cart and you either return one or cancel one after purchasing and keep what you want at the sales price. Whack jobs out here calling a sale a scam.

Nope.
The price is so low technically the battery is free. These are clearance sales anyway are the other 1 cent clearances a scam I think not

If I had anything to use an edger on here in the SW, I'd grab this thing in a heartbeat. Edging rock isn't any fun though.

As someone who works does digital sales for another older company, I can almost guarantee you it's a problem with the way their promo system talks to their POS system. HD is most likely left with the choice to either not run the promos or accept there will be a subset of customers who will take advantage of the "hack".

Is it theft? No.
Is it HD's intention? No.
Is it scummy to take advantage of? Kinda, but HD is still coming out ahead by running the promos and they are almost certainly taking the hack into account when they run these promos.

Love my cordless tools, unless you have a large perimeter string trimmer works just as well. I can easily rotate the head and do the grass corners where a lawnmower cannot get to.
