We stayed somewhere last weekend and they had this ice machine. It does make a noise while making ice, but wasn't overly loud and it didn't bother us. Now tempted to get one...

Seems like the HD deal is dead? Only seeing 499.99. Was looking to purchase here since the warranty (which is a must buy on these) is almost 1/2 price and an extra year.

Buying from Costco for $469 seems like a better idea for something like this.

I have 2 of these and one of the old opal. The opal ended up making a lot of noise even though I tried adding oil like on YouTube eventually it found its way into the garage in a tote where it still resides. The two GEs are working fine even after several years.

I want to order this ice maker so bad, but the constant complaints of mold and other problems have stopped me. Tempted to get the Opal 1 instead. Anyone have any experience with it?

We have one. It's not perfect, but the ice it produces is wonderful and it will get you to drink a lot more water.

Don't get the Opal 1. It's bad.

Yes, this can have mold and calcium deposits but if you clean it occasionally it's not an issue. You're supposed to run a bit of bleach through it every couple months and that takes care of any mold. Vinegar helps control the calcium.

Re: the opal 2, Definitely use distilled water, a filter in the reservoir and stay on top of the cleaning schedule. It's not really a "set it and forget it" appliance, but can't beat the ice it makes.

We've owned both the original and the 2.0. There is a significant reliability and connectivity difference and the 2.0 is a much better machine. When researching you can ignore the older review of the original machines.

There is some noise, about on par with a mini- fridge compressor, that's not bad and also not constant as it sits quietly full of ice most of the time. That said, we run ours on a 18 hour on/off schedule- and the first few bits of ice landing in the empty bin sound like someone in the kitchen but only a small amount off ice accumulated quiets this. Probably more of a concern in an apartment or smaller home.

If you've always wanted a soft ice machine I do recommend it.

If you don't want to deal with mineral scale build-up you can use distilled water in the reservoir (the need for this is dependent on your local water). Otherwise white vinegar or the powdered citric acid does a great job cleaning the entire machine.
