I bought the UM690S a year ago directly from MINISFORUM. After waiting a month or more it arrived DOA. Had to send it back on MY dime and wait for THEM to receive it before they would ship a replacement. Another few WEEKS later it arrived and actually worked. So YES that extra $25 from Amazon is 100% worth it!

Not a better deal but they have it on Amazon for $25 more if you want it delivered quicker and have an easier time returning it if you don't like it. Again not a better deal but more of the Amazon tax for more convenience.

Had one. Downgraded to a NUC because the thing was so unstable. Hard freezes at least a few times a day. Forums said to downgrade RAM speed to 4800. That helped a lot, but still hard froze about every other day. You get what you pay for, I'll gladly pay more for anything but Minisforum.

Pretty good deal. 1 year without a single issue. Running with Arch Linux. But if you don't want to put too much effort into it: Manjaro works perfect out of the box. Can run AI fairly fast with its iGPU.

If you are using streaming services, it's a whole lot easier to use the native APPs on those devices for proper HDR/DV then that of a W10/11 machine. It's easier to use overall also. I own a couple mini PCs including and I find myself not using it for stream services at all.

You have been lucky, I bought a couple of these over the course of the last year to test them to see if we can fully deploy them on a large scale and most of them had random stability issues that would cause sudden shutdown or restarts.

It's has improved a lot since previous iterations but still can be a general hit or miss. Intel's Quicksync just edges out more on efficiency on this side of things.

About a year ago, I bought a Beelink EQ12 with a N100 processor and 16 GB DDR5 single-channel RAM. I upgraded the WiFi card to 6E. It came with Windows 11. They have a BIOS upgrade available but I don't want to chance bricking the machine. It is fine for a backup PC. Doesn't take too much to stress the N!00, but it is fine for normal tasks. It will decode 4K videos locally, but Plex network streaming is choppy. One negative is that the case opening for the rear USB-C port is not large enough to allow full insertion.

I see there is an EQ13 N200 out with an internal power supply, dual NICs and HDMI, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, and WiFi 6. $100 more than what I paid.

Did you play with memory timings & voltage? Those are more likely to cause crashes than frequency.

These systems are locked, you can't really play with timings and voltages. The issue with the UM790 Pro is the memory training can be a hit or miss depending on which memory IC you decide to use.

For what it worth, I remember spending sometime on their Discord to figure out which ssd and ram to buy to avoid issues. Some were notably bad with this mini pc. Also I immediately upgraded the BIOS to the latest firmware (1.09 if I recall).

I posted this before, but worth reposting here:

I bought a UM790 pro, Amazon, (OEM 32g and 512gHD, added 1T HD to 2nd slot) in July of 2023, after 3 months became extremely unstable, constant crashes with 20 different blue screen errors. I spent 2 months trouble-shooting to no avail.

Minisforum honored their warranty, I had to pay shipping to California. Took about a month total, received a brand new UM790 pro.

After 4 months (less usage this time) Crashes returned, seems to be a motherboard issue, possible needed better cooling. MORE TROUBLESHOOTING. Thru BIOS I turned max temp down, am currently at 65*c max temp and is stable, but gaming is a bit limited.

Love the machine, hopefully their newer models fixed issues.

This has more than enough power to play WoW even on higher than low graphics settings. Remember, WoW is a game from 2004 that is optimized to run on just about any PC. A 7940HS will handle it no problem.

These newer mini-PCs with a 5800U or better can handle every 2D game you can think of (maybe there's an outlier there, but you'd be hard pressed to find it), and most 3D games that aren't the latest graphically intense AAA title at least at 30 FPS. Even with the AAA titles if you drop them to the lowest graphics settings you can most likely get 30 FPS.

I would be careful of that depending on what you're doing with it. You don't want it to overheat because then it's just going to fry itself.

A little late to this conversation.
My desktop that I built about 10 years ago is finally running out of life and was looking to upgrade, but got curious about the Mini PC concept.
My use case is mostly home office pc, shared network drive across the home network, so on 24/7, and occasional gaming pc for my daughter (Resident evil, Silent hll, etc.)
Is this machine a good fit for that?
Or just build out a regular PC with similar configuration. Would that be more cost effective?

Appreciate any advice.
