Fire Toolbox only kind of works on these now - Google services even jankier to keep working properly. I got a good deal for these with a trade-in last Christmas for my kids... however, selling now and getting something that doesn't need constant attention to have apps work. I wouldn't get these for anything outside of what you would normally expect for FireOS.

For this price just buy Chinese or Tab S6 used.

So you're saying side loading apps is a pain now more than before? I didn't use the tool box. But still side loaded

Yeah, this is tempting since I have trade-ins (I'm loaded for bear on old Amazon crap to trade-in), but the next tablet I get really needs to be something that's not this business where you have to sideload the Play store, and it slows down, and I'm having trouble updating apps, etc. Unless of course they let a glitch past again where the 20% off for your trade-in comes off the full price instead of the sale price, in which case it's damn hard to refuse that, along with the $25 or $30 I'd get for my old tablet.

Edit: Dang, I just noticed there is 10% cash back if you pay with your Amazon card. And cb elsewhere. Now it's getting tempting.

Do you think this tablet is worth it for around $60, or not even then?

Is this much of an upgrade to fire 10+ tablet?

I encountered issues with several apps -- one example, YouTube Kids, required an older version to actually run otherwise I would get a prompt for requiring Google Play Services and the app would force close (and yes, it was installed). Of the three Max tablets, the one I purchased a few months later came pre-installed with a newer version of FireOS which made the launcher hijack method the one that would occasionally default to the Fire Launcher (annoying). More and more apps seemed to be "essential" and unable to be removed through the bloat removal process.

I've been running Fire Toolbox on these Fire tablets for several years now and see diminishing returns with each new generation.

From what I see, the Samsung Tab A9+ is very similar and comes with a warranty as opposed to being left on the hook for something to go horribly wrong with a noname Chinese tablet or a sketchy used tablet imo. Looking for sales this next week.

(Had a battery completely die 10 months after purchase on one of these Max 11's)

Honestly, I think the tablet itself is pretty nice. If it was just for me and the few apps I would be running (Plex, Mihon, and maybe a casual game or two), then I'd think it's worth it for $60. Anything requiring Google Services or utilizing the Fire Toolbox, idk, seems like a coin flip on compatibility. Maybe I'm just unlucky and others have had more success, but Amazon has made it much harder on this latest generation.

Yeah, I really don't want to keep messing with extra hoops/limitations. And I want something a little lighter than my current fire hd plus 10, not heavier. I'd be happy with a 9-10". This price is so tempting though, with trade-in, etc.. I'll probably pass - for now, lol.

At this price, the step up to get a 9th gen iPads that go on sale for $199 is worth it. (Trade in prices excluded obviously).

Comparing this to knock off ones is not usually close. The build quality on the newer Fire tablets are pretty solid. And once you find the right APKs (which isn't terribly hard), sideloading Google Play isn't that bad.

At the smaller screen version's price point, it becomes a tougher choice.

Amazon hired the fire toolbox dev so don't expect more hacks. Sideloading also will be harder in the future as Android changes to bundled apks

It is worth spending $20 more to upgrade to 128GB and remove the ads but at that price point ($160) you might as well just get the iPad 9th gen which still runs circles around this. Even with a 20% trade-in discount at a cost of $128, might still be worth spending $72 more to get the 9th gen iPad.

I am a little conflicted on what to do...

If you can get an app that blocks YouTube ads then iPad all day.

I went for the trade in on my 2021 Fire HD 10 (net cost of the new Max 11 about $80). After a few days of use I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. All the little freezes and occasional glitches I'd had with the 10 are gone, the response is noticeably snappier, and the screen appears just slightly crisper. Fire Toolbox seems just as effective as in previous versions - so far at least. Ads and bloatware apps disabled, no problem installing Google Play. All in all a similar tablet to my old HD 10, just slightly nicer. I only use this tablet to consume content (e-reader, videos, browsing), but for my purposes it's been a worthwhile upgrade.
