If you are spending this much on a NAS - Synology makes the best software NAS and is worth the money.

Terramaster OS is kind of garbage.

Agreed that TerraMaster OS is garbage and has a history of exploits; I run OMV on my TerraMaster and would put it up against most anything out there including UnRaid, FreeNAS, and DSM ports.

This is decent hardware for $560 (not worth $700, IMO). It would be a better deal if this was a 5 or 6 bay system for this price.

I agree with other commenters. Avoid the built in OS and use something else. If you don't have IT-like aptitude (lack of experience or interest), it's better to go with a Synology NAS. If you are comfortable installing OSes and doing at least minor technical support, there are many options.

TrueNAS is free but is somewhat challenging to set up. There are plenty of good guides, but it has a learning curve.

unRAID is easier to set up and manage, but it has a cost. You can try it out for free for 30 days. I used to run TrueNAS Scale and have tried other OSes, but settled on unRAID. I do have a couple Synology NASes as well, mostly for backups at this point.

CasaOS could be an option for some people. Openmediavault is another option. Or, you could install Windows or something else.

If you don't know, then you probably don't need it.

Seems to be out of stock on Amazon. Though it's available at Newegg for the same price. Any opinion on this versus the Synology DS1522+, which is currently available for the same price.

The synology unit has an extra bay, but the Terramaster seems to have much better hardware. If I get the Terramaster, I will probably install Unraid. That'll increase the cost, a bit, but then it's still in the same ball-park. I would have liked to have hardware Transcoding, but not sure if I'll use that much. I've moved to client-side decoding anyway (having a lifetime license to Infuse and Plex-pass). With Infuse one never needs hardware transcoding, but I don't want to tie myself in a corner.

I bought the DS1522+ just to reserve a unit since it was a lightening deal (it'll not ship immediately it seems, so I have time to cancel the order), but I'll decide today which one I want to buy. Any advice would be appreciated.
