You need the phone in hand -- they text you a confirmation code that you have to enter each time you login to your online account

A lot of them are hoping for a ridiculous trade-in deal. Google gave $800 trade in credit a couple of months ago when you bought the new Pixel 9. ATT was giving $1000 trade credit for the iPhone 12 up thru end of September, so we could see similar offers in the next 8 weeks.

You don't have to cancel the service. Just don't pay and it will be cancelled.

Yes, as JaTaN mentioned you need to wait. If you place order for 2nd phone and you did something similar, then you don't have to wait to order 3rd phone.
