I haven't seen this deal posted. The Milwaukee M12 detail sander is being offered at Home Depot with a XC4.0 battery for $149.00 with free shipping or store pickup.

It is available in two buying formats:
  • Package deal - select Attachment Options: w/ Additional (1) 4 Ah Battery(s)
    • $149.00 for both items
  • With the battery as a free gift. In this case the items are prorated as:
    • Detail sander (2531-20) - $93.28
    • XC4.0 battery (48-11-2440) - $55.72
The sander is useful for getting into corners and on small workpieces. It's not a substitute for a random orbital sander for larger flat surfaces. The detail sander has the advantage over the sanding attachment on an oscillating multitool that it is orbital and so doesn't leave the scratch pattern that you get with the oscillating tool.

This deal matches the lowest price I have seen for this sander.

I have the M12 Fuel 2526 Oscillating Tool and, with the sanding triangle on it, it seems to do what this orbital sander would do. Does this orbital sander add anything, capability-wise?

The detail sander is smaller and lighter making it a little more agile, but the main advantage is the reduction in swirl marks. Here are a couple of YouTube reviews comparing head to head:

I have both, this thing is light years better at sanding.

the key difference is in the motion between an oscillating tool and the orbital sander. Oscillating is just a back and forth motion at a consistent speed, which can (will) leave surface imperfections visible regardless of the grit you're using. While the orbital is more of a circular motion for paint/finish prep that eliminates those visible surface scratches/imperfections.
