Asus Z1 Extreme deserves to be at the price .
Meh !! Pass on otherwise.
There is no reason to get a Z1 whatsoever. Get a Z1 extreme open box or used somewhere for around the same price
Non-Extreme model is trash. Don't waste your money.

I'm planning on getting a Steam Deck OLED. I realize it's supposed to have better specs than the Ally, but at this price point the difference is just too large to simply ignore it.

Agh man, choices are always hard

for some context, the Z1 uses a significantly cut down igpu than the Z1 Extreme which makes it often about 2/3 of the performance of the higher product, and slower than the Steam Deck. The sole reason why you would want this device over the steam deck is that you are strictly going to be playing CPU limited situations over gpu ones, so the device would make a better emulation device than the steam deck. (since 6 Zen 4 cores have better ipc and cpu performance than the Steam Decks 4 Zen 2 cores)

There are some advantages to having Windows, but most of it just boils down to being able to play some games that you can't play on the Steam Deck due to certain types of anti-cheat.

SteamOS on the Deck is a much more polished experience than Windows on a handheld. I've tried both and much prefer the Steam Deck with SteamOS. One thing that I find so much better on SteamOS is the ability to put the Deck to sleep and know that my game will resume properly when I pick it back up. Windows was terrible for that.

Ergonomics are also better on the Deck. I've used both a Steam Deck and an ASUS Ally and the Deck felt much better in my hands, though that will be personal preference. The position of the thumbsticks on the Deck feel so much more natural, especially the right thumbstick.
