The SSD in this is also faster than the M2. Might not notice it in day to day tasks, but still. For $100 more than the earlier M2 deal, I think the upgrades here and an extra year of software support is worth it (definitely more so than paying $200 for an extra 256gb of onboard storage).

Anyone with opinion about diff colors
I went with Starlight.

Midnight looks pretty good, particularly if you are inclined toward a darker look, with the caveat that it seems to be tough to actually keep clean.

Space Gray is, well, space gray. It's a decent color - my wife's MacBook Air is that color, as well as one of my past iPad's.

Silver is fine. But if you're getting an Apple device and think that space gray is a little boring, Starlight isn't that much brighter or flashy than Silver, but it is a little more distinct.

TLDR: Midnight and Starlight are the best colors, depending on whether you want darker or lighter. Space Gray is 'basic Apple', for better or worse.

Looks like no silver for 16gb/512 on amazon. Hmmm Best Buy or Costco.

Odd that Costco hasn't price matched. Maybe on Cyber Monday, but that seems unlikely.

I went for starlight too. I was debating between midnight and starlight. Wanted midnight but the fingerprint and smudge issues are still there even with the anodization seal.

starlight is dumb
silver reeks of 2010's apple
black shouts "I just wanna blend in despite this apple in front of me"
space grey is an indecisive admission that you're indecisive about silver vs. black

you can't go wrong with any of them!
(I like space grey).
Silver is still the best in terms of scratches or nicks in the finish not being as obvious.

It's now silver and starlight $899. The other 2 are $999 - $99.01 coupon. So same price. But all 4 $55 more than post.

Never owned a Mac before. Is there any reason for me to use a Mac over a ordinatory Window Laptop?
The hardware is to notch. The bodies are aluminum. Screen is excellent. Trackpad is the best I've used. Apple ecosystem is great if you own an iPhone and iPad. You can share clipboards and sync over iCloud between the devices. macOS is also a lot snappier when browsing and sounds and battery life is superb. I picked up an m1 MacBook Air 8gb 256 for my dad who only uses it for you tube and trading. He receives phone calls and messages right on the MacBook since he has an iPhone. He's coming from a Chromebook.

I'm coming from a Lenovo x1 carbon gen 11 to a MacBook Pro 14 M3. This is a work laptop πŸ’» it's definitely a learning curve trying to adjust how macOS does things. Finder is a POS. I'm missing some productivity apps you can't find on Mac. Apps aren't as freely available on Mac as they are on windows. Mac has a native Linux shell which is nice, but it only comes with zsh so it's not quite useable out of the box. Memory management is much better than Windows, browsing stays snappy. Sound and battery life is superb. If I were to purchase my own laptop I would go with MacBook. I'm done with Windows.

Thanks. This is a great write up. I am also trying to switch off of Windows and migrate to MacBook. It is a way better experience. But the switch has not come easy. Just some growing pains but overall it has been worth it.

I'm coming from 40 years of Windows + 15 years of Android. Now I'm iPhone, Macbook, iPad, and Apple Watch. Its way better over here on the Apple side. Its also more expensive.

for sure $$$ i haven't had to purchase any workflow apps yet. i've been able to find suitable apps. however some substitute workflow apps just arent available. here are ones ive used with windows that I havent been able to find exact replacements.

Powertoys fancy zones
xmbc (x-mouse button control) mouse chording
autohotkey
greenshot (i hear the mac version is terrible or a work in progress)
FSviewer
LittleBigMouse

Apple app store is locked out of my work laptop so im limited to downloading direct.
